anyone on here been to Amsterdam? just wondering whats your thoughts and any places you recommend to go!
Obviously know a few things

A bit overated........found it very expensive........ok if you want a legal smoke or some strange mushrooms i suppose........or if you want a lady of the night.

Hamburg a better option. Reeperbahn.

I went to Amsterdam in October and had a excellent time, although that was more down to the company than the location.

It's an EXTREMELY expensive city and even in the most crappiest of pubs and clubs you're looking at £6 a drink. It doesn't matter if it's a pint or a bottle, £6 seems to be the going rate.

Obviously if your a smoker or looking for prostitutes then it's paradise on earth, but if you're not into either of those things then there are definitely better cities to visit.

I had a great time but wouldn't go back. I spent an absolute bomb and didn't have a lot to show for it!

Best to go in the summer,sit outside the many cafes and bars,nice to have a walk around if the weathers nice and watch the many street entertainers.Lots of museums and art galleries and of course the many cafes selling weed.The red light areas fun as well,some good shows to see.

Had my stagnight there. Fuckin awesome!

Its only expensive if you can't afford it so thats all irrelevant tbh.

A few tips though:

1) If you plan to be getting high, drunk or both be very aware of the trams when walking as its easy to stroll off the pavement into a tram line and they go at some speed!!!

2) the bike lanes and walkways are adjacent to eachother and if you walk in a bike lane prepare for a cyclist to brush past you letting you know you shouldn't be there or worse if you complete block their passage.

sorry to bore you with that, but a tram went straight past me and I was not aware of the tram lines being so near to the walkway...I shat my pants!!

Familiarise yourself with the road layout BEFORE getting wasted!!

I'd say rent an electric bike to take you smoothly all over the place. And be sure to take care in traffic, I was hit by the mirror of a scooter and hit once by a bike. And do the museums and stuff before you start puffing, because suddenly everything will be so smooth you only get to see the parks.

Went in June for my mates stag and didn't find it that expensive to be honest. A drank bow most of the weekend at €5 a pint, which granted is more than Cardiff but about on par with most places in London. (And when your told before you go it's going to be 6 or 7 euros, I found it a bonus ) Or Heniken at about €2.50 a bottle.

Hamburg is awesome much better than Amsterdam unless your druggie.

Dusseldorf and cologne best nights you can get i think. Dusseldorf by night is the best night ive had, beat amsterdam easily, cologne is awesome for day beers and you just hop on the train one stop back to dusseldorf. can fly ryanair straight into the city

Been several times for work and pleasure and agree with many of the above posts - there are much better cities to visit unless you are after specific things.

Whatever they charge you for a pint (and it is expensive), you'll never actually get pint. It'll be a smaller than a pint glass, filled but with a quarter of froth on the top. And you'll get no joy if you ask them to fill it to the top with beer.

Me and few of my mates went in December and it was a good crack the prices are up and down which you expect the most I paid for a pint was 7 euros. Stayed in a hostel which I can't remember the name of but it was great there and food was cheap as to had discount cause you stayed there.

The best bar I went to out there had to be the grolsch bar it was a good laugh and the barmaids in there were great got along with them all weekend just don't fall asleep in there cause if they caught you they'd make sure everyone seen you they would knock the music off and put this alarm on and shout down the microphone.

It's like a different world out there to you walk down the street and you just have people come up to you want to buy cocaine and they just deal it in the middle of the street like its legal.

As for the cafés I find they very cramped and some of the workers are rude one guy didn't even bother speaking to us we asked him for a coffee and some wacky backy and he just got it and just stood there waiting for the money as if we knew the price.

I'd recommend going there you'll enjoy it

I haven't been for a few years now to many to remember to be honest, used to go on a regular basis through work and always had a good laugh.
I reckon as long as your with a few mates you'll have a great time, I could mention a list of places to visit but I can't guarantee they'd still be open and also my wife might have a browse, so just go with an open mind and enjoy the crack.........

go on the heineken brewery tour......pretty cheap and you will get to "taste" a lot more than you paid for the actual trip

Buy Magic Truffles by the Mcdonalds in the centre.

I would seriously agree with this. I took those truffle things then walked around in an absolute nightmare of flashing lights. Everywhere people were staring and laughing at me, that might have just been real though. If you take them, take them in your hotel!!!!!!!!.

I went in 96 to watch holland v wales, good place but be wary of muggers. If I remember right 2 welsh lads got stabbed when we were out there.
