Wilfried Zaha looks set to leave Manchester United on loan in January

Cardiff City are looking to bolster their squad options further by signing Manchester United and England winger Wilfried Zaha on loan until the end of the season.

The Bluebirds are one of several Premier League sides locked in a transfer window battle to sign the precociously gifted 21-year-old, with Newcastle, Swansea, Stoke and possibly Aston Villa also in the race.

But it is thought Cardiff are in pole position to land Zaha once United boss David Moyes gives his exit the green light, with the player believed to be open to the chance of a switch to South Wales.

Zaha’s old club Crystal Palace, the team his brilliance helped take into the top flight, have also enquired about taking Zaha back to Selhurst Park.

But Palace’s Welsh boss Tony Pulis conceded yesterday his Zaha hopes were doomed, saying Manchester United boss David Moyes had set his sights upon the player going somewhere else.

Sources close to the deal confirmed the Bluebirds have made an approach and are believed to be right at the head of the battle to grab the player.

New Bluebirds manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will believe Zaha’s trickery, mazy running and eye for goal can give his team a new creative cutting edge from the flank.

Solskjaer is already close to making Norway midfielders Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Mats Moller Daehli his first signings, the two international stars having already taken their medicals.

But he will look to bring in three other players during this month’s transfer window to further bolster the squad left behind by Malky Mackay, with Zaha and Blackpool youngster Tom Ince two of the targets.

A further option could be Newcastle centre-back Steven Taylor, whom Solskjaer is also being linked with in the London media.

Taylor has made just two appearances for Alan Pardew’s side this season due to a hamstring injury and the form of fellow defender Mike Williamson, with reports suggesting Cardiff are keen to test Newcastle’s resolve to keep hold of him.

Taylor, who has featured in England squads but is yet to make his full international debut, could become another centre-back option to play next to Bluebirds skipper Steven Caulker, with Solskjaer insisting his players must keep hold of the ball better at Premier League level.

He also pledges a more offensive, creative brand of football than the one served up under predecessor Mackay and signing Zaha, or a similar crowd-pleaser who will wow the fans, could be a key ingredient in that aim.

Cardiff face stiff competition for Zaha, but United boss Moyes wants to get him game time at a club where he is happy with the playing structure.

Solskjaer’s own Old Trafford links are bound to be a help in any negotiations, with the Manchester United hierarchy said to be impressed with the football ethos their former UEFA Champions League winner is trying to implement in South Wales.

Solskjaer wants his team to adopt a pass and move football mantra, which will suit Zaha and the way United want any of their players going out on loan to play.

Zaha was reportedly set to sign for Cardiff earlier, but Mackay’s sacking placed question marks over the deal.

However, Solskjaer is said to want to follow through with his new club’s interest in the two-times capped England international.

Zaha, who signed a permanent deal with Manchester United 12 months ago before agreeing a loan move back with Palace until the end of last season, looks certain to move and is bound to hold talks with a number of interested parties.

What is your source? I've seen a few people saying it's done but no link to anything, the delay of the players is killing me  too excited.
