Norway playmaker Eikrem, sold by Molde to Heerenveen during the summer, has been compared in the Dutch media to former Tottenham and current Real Madrid star Luka Modric.
Magnus Wolff Eikrem looks set to be joining Cardiff City after joining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Newcastle
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans to make two of his former Molde kingpins Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Mats Moller Daehli his first Cardiff City signings.
The gifted midfielders are locked in negotiations with the Bluebirds and are expected to put pen to paper before Saturday’s Premier League crunch against West Ham.
Norway playmaker Eikrem, sold by Molde to Heerenveen during the summer, has been compared in the Dutch media to former Tottenham and current Real Madrid star Luka Modric.
His Norwegian team-mate Daehil, 18, is being talked of back home as a potential footballing superstar in the making.
Solskjaer believes Cardiff’s midfield give the ball away too easily and views Eikrem and Daehli as ideal men to retain possession and also provide the cutting edge which has been missing for most of the season.
The duo each played for Manchester United reserves under Solskjaer, before he took them into Norwegian football.
Eikrem and Daehli could yet be joined in Wales by a third member of Solskjaer’s old Molde team, with goalkeeper Oliver Nyland also reported to be in the City manager’s sights.
Solskjaer refused to name targets following his team’s stunning 2-1 FA Cup triumph at Newcastle, but the capture of the highly-rated Eikrem is imminent after the 13-times capped offensive midfielder attended the match on Tyneside and travelled back on the team bus.
Heerenveen’s manager, the legendary Dutch maestro Marco Van Basten, confirmed Eikrem’s move to Cardiff last night by saying: “We had to sell Magnus. It is a pity that he’s leaving because he has been important for us.”
Asked why he was in Newcastle, Eikrem smiled and replied: “No comment. I’m here to watch a soccer match.”
He left the ground with Solskjaer and ran straight onto the Cardiff coach for the trip back to South Wales.
Teenager Daehli, capped twice by his country, flew into Heathrow yesterday afternoon for talks with Solskjaer and was due to undergo his medical at the Vale Hotel training base last night.
