Toshack on the Welshness of Cardiff

Tue May 11, 2010 8:25 am

To bring Premiership football to Cardiff well... the players that we've [Wales] got in the Premiership would come here, we'd see more of them for the city itself," Toshack said.

"From a selfish point of view - and you have to differentiate from a Wales manager's point of view and Cardiff - we'd like to see one or two more Welsh players involved, but people shouldn't take that the wrong way."

I agree, we definitely need more Welsh players in the squad.

No, we need good quality players irrespective of nationality.

Both those keepers over Marshall? :o

Bellamy works hard, but he's getting on, knee problems - and what position would he play? You're looking up front with Bothroyd, which means either Ross or Chops would effectively be sold. and then if Bellamy could give 1-2 more seasons before the knee problems cause him to miss a lot of playing time, we then need to replace.

Bale, well, sure, but he's not a left back. His defending isn't great, which means we'd either drop Whittingham or push Whittingham right and drop Burke. Plus, it's hypothetical, we've zero chance of getting him without paying silly money.

Giggs, again, someone with 1-2 seasons left. Either push him central midfield or we'd have the same problems as with Bale.

So there's two players in a position we don't need to replace, two in the twilight of their careers and one unobtainable :x

If we could get either, I'd like ginge back ( not going to happen... ) or Gabbidon on a pay as you play deal. The areas we need work on are center back, left back and central midfield. Of the Welsh options for those positions, we're looking at say the likes of Simon Davies, some of the younger Welsh midfielders, Koumas, Ricketts, Eardley. Midfield wise, Collison may be a shout on loan depending upon the new West Ham manager, Rambo could even be a possibility dependent upon recovery from injury - Wenger may want him out of loan whilst he regains full fitness, but if he's fully fit, he's part of the first team squad.

Either way, we can't be nationalistic about it. getting good Welsh talent would be great, if they are an upgrade. If there are players from other nationalities who provide better upgrades ( younger, cheaper, better long term upside ) then that's what we need to do.

Obviously I won't complain if we had Messi over Simon Davies, but its always nice to have players that reflect the nationality of the club and the majority of the club's fans.

We're pretty much like Arsenal being an English club with the lack of English players in their team we only two regular Welsh players and we're a Welsh club.

Hmmmm... Marshall is a good keeper who will be decent in the Premiership, certainly not worth rushing out to replace. Would you put either of those in when they could command £5 million transfer fees? I'd rather spend it elsewhere in the squad. Bellamy can't be trusted to last the pace with his injury record. Bale? How much money will we be getting? Certainly he will be out of our reach and would he want to come here when he will probably be in the Champions League next season. Giggs? No, ta
