the need for a left back.

Fri Jan 03, 2014 3:12 pm

A lot of people last few days suggesting we should go out and get buttner, or another left back in the window.

With Ole's apparent favoritism with youth, and Declan John starting to get a foothold in the side, do people really think this is important?

personally id like to give the boy a chance, dont really think hes let us down in 5 (?) appearances so far

Absolutely agree, the young man shows a lot of promise. He plays at least ten metres further up the field than Taylor, his use of the ball has been impressive and mature. He has a good aggressive attitude and he is quick. He does need to work on his defensive positioning.
The question that will perplex Ole, however, is can he trust this young player for the rest of the season? Is Taylor good enough cover?

in my opinion the answer is yes.

Paul this time last week I would have said a new left back was a must. However young Dec has done enough in the last two games to convince me that he is ready to step up.

In the previous games he's played against Stoke and West Ham I thought he looked out of his depth but he seems to have grown in confidence and I thought he was one of our best players versus Arsenal.

I'd definitely give him a run in the team now and if he struggles then bringing Taylor back in wouldn't be the end of the world for me.

I thought Declan John was once again, solid and dependable at Arsenal. Walcott didn't get the better of him and John also offers a threat going forward. It was only when Walcott switched to up front he was able to outpace our centre backs to latch onto a through ball to score. John keeps getting better and better every game, I think he's already playing at a higher level than Taylor. I don't think Taylor could have cut out the number of through balls that were slid inside John for Walcott to run onto. I don't think we need a left back now, we should keep playing John and keep watching him improve, as I think he's more than good enough now but could turn into something special if we keep playing him. But Taylor is still good enough back up despite having a few poor games. Taylor was able to stop Jesus Navas after all.

Too many managers (and we've had a few) won't put their faith in youngsters.
I can think of a few left backs over the last 5 years or so who have been thrown in the deep end and have come out smiling, think of Bale, Gibbs, Ben Davies, Luke Shaw etc They all started with potential and were given a chance, they've all made mistakes but their managers kept faith. Remember Bale and his start at Spurs?
Now I'm not saying Declan John is going to be as good as some of those, but he's shown plenty of potential and I would definitely stick with him. He could just become a gem?? :ayatollah:

From what I've read, Ole likes young attacking fullbacks so John may fit the bill.

If we can better like Buttner them so be it.

Personally I think he's totally wasted at left back. This lad has skill, awareness, can run past people, pass, shoot and cross. He would make a good wide MF player or even a centre midfield player. I really think his future lays as an attacking/creative player rather than a defender. :ayatollah:

I posted similar a while back and was told he was a winger but has been converted to LB. Think i heard he started out as a striker!

He started as a striker before being pushed out wise then turned into a left back.

I definitely agree with keeping John as first choice. Never really been a fan of Taylor but there's no doubt he's the best we could hope for as a second choice for the time being. Unless something brilliant turns up I think we're all right there now.

ManU has given Buttner a grand total of 1 start in the PL with Evra begging for a rest and also being out of contract in June. I saw him a little bit against Wet Spam and the commentators were not enthusiastic about his foot speed and decision making. But who really knows.

I was aware that he started as a striker and then a winger before being converted to a left back. Youth team players often play in different positions until they find their best one. Personally I think he offers more as an attacker than defender :ayatollah:

that was my thinking, he's not afraid to bomb forward and take people on, plus he likes to have a pop at goal. Think he would have been a better option out wide than Whitts who's wasted there.
