Cardiff City Football Club has admitted it ordered stewards to remove banners from the ground during the game against Sunderland on Saturday.

The club was contacted by the Cardiff City Supporters Trust after they had complained of stewards trying to remove banners from fans during the 2-2 draw.

Supporters' Trust chairman Tim Hartley said: "We have received a number of complaints regarding what was described as heavy handed stewarding during Saturday’s match against Sunderland. Banners were removed and some members said they had been asked to stop singing certain chants."

On contacting the club the Trust received a response from stadium manager Wayne Nash, who said: “We do not allow banners into the stadium that are political, discriminative, offensive or inflammatory.I am sure the Trust welcome this position.

"The Safety Officer or I determine the threshold, particularly for the latter two categories for we are named persons on the safety certificate with the responsibility for providing a safe environment.

He added: "I can confirm that stewards were told to confiscate ‘Tan out’ banners and remove them from the bowl where possible.

"After a fight almost broke out in the Canton Stand between somebody holding up a Thank You Malky banner and fans who could not see the game, we advised that all large banners should be taken down. I’m sure fans had got their point across with thank you banners pre-game.

"Nobody was ejected or is being viewed for chanting or simply having a banner. There was one ejection for bad language which SWP are viewing for a racial public order offence and another fan is being warned pre-game at the next match about his constant four letter tirade after complaint from fellow supporters and his behaviour will be monitored.

"We can’t stop people airing their views and as long as it is not offensive, indecent, inflammatory, discriminatory or racist we will not look to take any action.”

Only days ago the Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust expressed its dismay after club owner Vincent Tan pulled out of a scheduled meeting following the sacking of Malky Mackay.

Tan had agreed to meet with fans amid the crisis engulfing the club, with supporters demanding answers on a number of issues that have seen the Cardiff hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent months.

“We are very disappointed that this meeting has been postponed at a time of great instability at the club," said Hartley. "We’ve been told that Mr Tan will meet the Trust when the new manager is appointed and we now look forward to that meeting.

“Given the recent off the field debacle, we believe it is more important than ever that Mr Tan engages with supporter groups and the fans generally. This meeting provided Mr Tan with an immediate opportunity to start building bridges with fans and that opportunity has been missed.

“There are many questions the fans still want answered, around corporate governance and transparency, the club’s financial future and the rebranding. We will put these to Mr Tan at our rearranged meeting which needs to be held as soon as possible.”

Tan finally to decided to sack Mackay after leaving Cardiff City Stadium at half time during the 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Southampton on Boxing Day.

It brought an end to months of turmoil behind the scenes at Cardiff after a complete breakdown in relations between the Malaysian owner and popular boss Mackay.

Ahead of that match, hundreds of Cardiff fans protested against Tan's running of the club, including his treatment of Mackay.

To be honest my first thoughts when the stewards were chasing down the banner was that holding that up in front of other supporters would have caused a problem or two. F..k me we wait ages to see a decent bit of attacking football then someone blocks your view for 4 or 5 minutes while they sing a few songs.

It's too late now to ban the banners whenever the news media discuss Tan and Cardiff City in a negative sense they will show the Tan out placards that were displayed at Liverpool and at the Sunderland game :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

If the thank you malkey banner was to big and causing a problem why couldn't they just advise the person with it to hang it over the side like the flags or put it up at the back so it's not in anybody's way

pretty simple... make 2 banners, ones says (in tiny letters) "thanks" and (in large) "TAN"; the other one "Malky" (in tiny letters) and "OUT" (in large) and place them together with one or 2 people in between... :D

I can understand why the club (and ultimatelythe owner) would want to stop the 'Tan Out' banners, but what harm is being done by showing a 'Thank You Malky' banner ????

Just another nail in the CCFC coffin. I have supported the club for 30+ years but rarely make the effort to attend games any more.

- i don't like/agree with the rebrand.

- i find the new stadium has no atmosphere and do not enjoy a match day experience any more.

- in the past i used to go to away games on a regular basis. These days its just impossible to get a ticket as you need 6 or 8 away matches from last season to qualify.

Watching Cardiff is not fun any more and i'm finding there's plenty of other things i can do on a weekend instead of going to matches, which is really sad as i used to love going to watch the 'City'.
