Cardiff City caretaker boss David Kerslake admits players found out about Malky Mackay sacking on TV
29th Dec 2013.

News of Malky Mackay's sacking was delivered to the players on TV but believes it was behind them by the start of the Sunderland match

Cardiff City’s caretaker manager David Kerslake has revealed the players learned about Malky Mackay's sacking on the television but insists they had put it behind them before kicking off against Sunderland

The man who has distanced himself from the full-time role said after yesterday's match: “The players found out (about Mackay’s dismissal) via the TV.

“I guess they are only human and they have probably been on the phone talking about it.

“But the way we came out the traps on Saturday, they certainly put it behind them.

In a tribute to the way Mackay set his teams up, his former assistant said: “The manager has asked for that start for the last two-and-a-half years, to come out all guns blazing.

“For 35 to 40 minutes we blew Sunderland away.”

Since Mackay's dismissal on Friday, chairman Mehmet Dalman has been tasked with finding a replacement and Kerslake says the new man will find himself in a great position at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The former Tottenham player said: “The new manager will inherit a wonderful group of players. “Every one of them is wholehearted and have great togetherness.

“He will also come to a great place where the support for this club is second to none.”

Kerslake is now preparing Cardiff for their match at Arsenal and, possibly, the FA Cup tie at Newcastle on Saturday, January 4, but isn’t looking beyond the match at the Emirates.

“I believe I will still be taking the team for that game,” he said. “We know they are one of the finest sides in Europe, but we will go up there with no fear and in good spirits.”

Interesting comment regarding the start we made against Sunderland - " The manager has been asking for that start for two and a half years " It suggests that while he may have been asking for it, the very fact that it didn't happen until Saturday means that Malky couldn't motivate them enough to produce it. Kerslake managed it in his first game, which to me says quite a lot about the approach of players and manager.

His comments about Arsenal are spot on too - just hope that he learns quickly about his substitutions and closing out a lead if we get one...

Or perhaps it didn't happen until Saturday as the Sunderland game was the first of the struggling teams we have played at home. Honestly think mm would have kept us up with west ham, Fulham, Norwich, palace , stoke and villa all to come to cardiff .
