Cardiff City caretaker David Kerslake: 'Last 24 hours has put me off being manager for life!

image.jpg

The Cardiff caretaker coach says he has no desire to become full-time manager, joking that the stresses of the past day or so have put him off the role

Former Spurs defender David Kerslake will be in charge of the Bluebirds for their New Year's Day match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in North London, but says: "I have no desire to be Cardiff City manager."

Kerslake was Malky Mackay's assistant and took charge, along with first team coach Joe McBride, for the 2-2 draw against Sunderland after the manager was dismissed.

But no matter what happen,s Kerslake insists he will not be taking charge in the long term.

"I have no desire to be manager," he said.

"I have been in this position for six hours, had three phone calls from directors, one from the chief executive, one from the chairman and one from the owner. That's probably put me off for life!

"They were all well wishes as well, by the way. I have been a coach for 10 years. I love what I do. I love being on the grass with the players.

"With respect, I wouldn't be interested in this job. I love being a coach, I loved being on the grass with the players, helping improve them. That is where I see myself."

Kerslake is going to be caretaker manager again for the match against Arsenal and possibly the FA Cup tie at Newcastle on Saturday, January 4, but isn't looking beyond the match at the Emirates.

"I believe I will still be taking the team for that game," he said.

Cardiff have launched their search for Mackay's replacement, while Kerslake said after seeing Cardiff lose a two goal lead against Sunderland: "The players are devastated in the dressing room. We got ourselves in a fabulous position and should have seen the game out.Â

"It is disappointing for us because we were 2-0 ahead with eight minute to go. We conceded a poor goal so there is work to be done.

"The players found out (about Mackay's dismissal) via the TV. I guess they are only human and they have probably been on the phone talking about it.

"But the way we came out the traps today they certainly put it behind them.

"The manager has asked for that start for the last two-and-a-half years, to come out all guns blazing. For 35 to 40 minutes we blew Sunderland away."

And the last 45 mins of the game shows me you couldn't, if you wanted to be.

Especially the last twenty. Totally gormeless, manager and players. They need a bomb up their arses.

New start and all that.

Let's not be too harsh.

That's his first ever game in charge, and he gave us more attacking football in 45 mins than we've had all season!!

The sad thing is that I think I'd rather Kerslake over the top 3 managers who are favourite to take over.

It really is sad. I'd keep Kerslake and sack some of our fans.

To be fair, he qualified that by saying they were all "good luck" messages, but hey, why let the real story get in the way of the headline, eh?

That's part of the problem at this club at the moment (and I have been a little guilty of it myself, if I am honest) where people are too quick to take in the 'version' of any given story that suits our own agendas when in reality we frequently don't know (or maybe WANT to know) the full facts :(

So why say what he said if there good luck messages " good luck today" does not warrant a " That's probably put me off for life!" as that would happen every week if thats the case for a manager if thats what was really said in the phone calls. he also says "I wouldn't be interested in this job" but would at another club as this reply does not rule that out. It dont add up to me imo and who could blame him working the lunatic :D

Come off it, fella

If you listened to the whole interview, he qualified it (with a smile) that he hadn't particularly enjoyed the WHOLE experience of running the show, and saw stated "I see myself as a coach on the pitch with the players and not a manager" ;)

Not sure how he could have made things any clearer; although I guess you would have 'amended' his words to suit your agenda again, as you usually do

I enjoy reading lots of your posts, as they amuse me, but not on occasions like this when there is enough genuine negativity to be found at the CCS :ayatollah:

I agree mate - more shots from outside the box in one game than the rest of the season put together. OK, he got the subs wrong and ultimately that cost us two points, but give the guy a break - he didn't do too badly otherwise.

He will learn from his mistakes.

Can you imagine what pressure what he pressure he was under to get a result? To get managers to join?

Some real fickle fans on here.
