Cardiff City will hand Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a big January transfer kitty if he agrees to succeed Malky Mackay as manager

Manchester United's former Norwegian star is top of the Bluebirds wanted list to take over the hot-seat

CARDIFF City will hand Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at least £15m to spend in the January transfer window if he accepts the invitation to succeed Malky Mackay.

The Manchester United legend is the No.1 choice to replace Mackay, whose two-and-a-half year reign ended yesterday when he was sacked by Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan.

Club chairman Mehmet Dalman has been given the go-ahead by Tan to find Mackay’s successor and it is understood that the former striker is the man top of his list.

Solskjaer began his coaching career at Old Trafford in charge of the United reserves before taking over at Molde FK in his native Norway in November 2010.

Unfashionable Molde won the Norwegian title in Solskjaer’s first two seasons in charge and, although they slipped to sixth spot in his third campaign, the club won the Norwegian Cup for only the third time in its history.

Bluebirds life-president San Hammam last night endorsed the pursuit of the 40-year-old saying: “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fits the profile. I have known him since he was a young kid, and I tried to buy him when I was owner of Wimbledon.

“He had a good grounding playing for Manchester United and has learned good lessons in Molde.”

However, Cardiff could face a battle to lure Solskjaer from Molde as he rejected overtures from Aston Villa to succeed Alex McLeish in May 2012.

Solskjaer said he did not want to avoid disrupting his family after they had settled back in Norway – and Cardiff might encounter similar problems.

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, Turkish coach Yilmaz Vural and former Argentina and Chile boss Marcelo Bielsa have all been linked with the post, but Solksjaer is the man Cardiff want.

Mackay’s departure came after days of speculation over his future, the Scot refusing to resign after Tan sent him an e-mail criticising his management of the team and claiming there had been a £15m overspend on summer transfers.

“There has been a good deal of publicity generated by and about Mr Malky Mackay over the last few months. Indeed far too much dirty linen has been exposed to the public gaze,” Tan said in a statement.

‘But, I stress, not by me. Indeed, I have deliberately not responded to this, hoping that the Club can be judged on its football rather than personalised arguments about who said what to whom.

‘I have, however, regretfully concluded that it is no longer fair to the Club, its players, its fans, or the public more generally, for this uncomfortable state of affairs to continue. “Cardiff City Football Club means far too much to us all for it to be distracted by this.”

Tan had responded to Mackay’s request for three new players in January – a defender, a midfielder and a striker – by saying there was no money for new signings.

But money will be made available to the new manager with Tan desperate to avoid relegation.

Mackay’s No.2 David Kerslake and Joe McBride will take charge of the team for Sunderland’s visit today.

Why doesn't latest news put the source of these stories at the top of the articles? Not a dig. I'd just like to know where these articles are from for obvious reasons. Eg Sunday Sport, Echo or 442.

No need for apologies. Like I said, it's not a dig. Just genuinely interested if stories are from a reputable source or not.

I wouldnt have given him 10pence to spend because he wouldnt have been my manager, the point im trying to make was TAN played the over spending thing as to how all this started in the mdeia and there was no money left now a new man gets a supposed war chest that wasnt there for malky as tan said the club had spent out this season :ayatollah:

Can't blame him not wanting to give Malky anymore money though. A new manager deserves a chance to use Tans money wisely.

Hopefully he can buy what should have been bought in the past 2 years and 60m on, a proper striker and a wide and some pace.

VT never said there was no money left, he said there was no money for Malky because of the way he wasted it in the summer. It's not complicated.

I just learnt how to spell Malky, now I may have to learn how to spell Solskjar why cant we have a manager with an easy name to spell :D :D :D :D

By the way how competitive is Norwegian football is stronger than Scottish football ? or Finish football the championship ?

I know OLG has played for some of the best clubs in Europe but managing in Norway and managing in the premiership surely is a leap into the unkown for him.

Managed United reserves under fergie for a number of years years as well. It's a risk without a doubt but most managers will be. Hopefully some experience him will help.

Would have softened the blow to get a manager with premier league experience but solskjaer just doesn't look like what we need.
should a great manager for someone and no doubt recommended by fergie but not us not now

I tell you what I wouldn't have done. I wouldn't have given two men with no experience of handling millions of pounds of transfer funds free reign over the financial dealings of transfers during the summer without someone with experience in such things casting a gaze over any deals.

Tan fucked up on it and he shifted the blame. Only one person to blame for the lost money and that's Tan.

Relagation experience wont matter with Ole
what matters is winning games and thats exactly what you have to do to stay in the league. If he can win titles he can avoid relegation hes got a brain many british managers dont have especially the outdated ones
