Malky Mackay refuses to resign and insists his team are where he thought they would be
26th Dec 2013
Soon after his team were beaten 3-0 at home to Southampton, Malky Mackay remained resolute and says his team are in the correct Premier League position
After defeat to Southampton the Bluebirds are now just a point off the bottom three, but boss Malky Mackay insists that’s exactly where he expected his side to be at this stage of the season.
Two goals from the Saints Jay Rodriguez and one from striker Ricky Lambert sank Cardiff City in the Welsh capital in a lacklustre showing from the home side.
With Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Fulham all winning, the bottom of the table looks very tight, but Macky, who is under growing pressure from club owner Vincent Tan, believes his side have what it takes to stay up.
“Overall this football club are competing well in the Premier League this season. We are not in the bottom three at around the halfway stage. Myself and my staff knew exactly how tough this was going to be this season,” said Mackay.
“We are competing well overall, there are games we should have won, there are games we should have done better in. This is a season where I firmly believe we can stay in this league and build on it like Southampton did last year, and kick on again like they have this year.
“There are plenty of good people at this football club, in terms of staff and players, all pulling in one direction and we firmly believe we can do that.
“But we must stay focused on the task in hand. Where we are is probably where I thought we were going to be, it was always going to be a tough battle no matter what as we were playing catch-up like the other two teams who came up.”
Cardiff were effectively out of the match within half an hour as Southampton completed the scoring on 27 minutes. Mackay was left lamenting some uncharacteristically poor defending for all three strikes from the visitors.
And he was also left ruing a glorious chance missed by Peter Whittingham early on which would have given the Bluebirds the lead.
“I thought we gave away three really poor goals and we can’t do that against a good team. It was unlike us in terms of the quality of the goals we lost,” said Mackay.
“We had a great chance just a couple for minutes before the first goal where (Craig) Noone puts a great ball into the back post and Peter Whittingham nine times out of ten would score.
“Within five minutes, they go and do something similar. We can’t give ourselves a mountain to climb in games. In the second-half, we came back into it and pressed them back and made more of a game of it. But we can’t give cheap goals away.”
Mackay’s relationship with Tan has become increasingly factious with the Malaysian businessman close to sacking the Scot on the weekend only to back down. The pair are set to meet soon, but Mackay insisted he and his staff were fully focussed on their jobs with Sunderland the visitors tomorrow for a crunch encounter.
When asked if his own situation was starting to affect the players, Mackay said: “You will have to ask the players. I’m certainly not going to make any excuses at all as far as that is concerned.
People can draw their own conclusions. Myself, the staff and the players are fully focussed on what we do on a Saturday or any given game day.”
One bright spot for Mackay was the fact £8m summer signing Andreas Cornelius played the second-half against Southampton after coming on in the break for Peter Odemwingie. Mackay said he was impressed by what he saw from the young Danish striker.
“It’s small steps in terms of getting Andreas back into it,” added Mackay.
“He has been out a long time with a bad ankle injury. I thought he and Fraizer linked up quite well up there and, he showed some nice touches. It’s his first season in the Premier League but he was player of the year in Denmark which was why we bought him.”

Not sure I agree that Cornelius linked up well, was glad he got 45 mins but thought he looked very poor today apart from a couple of decent headers. Looks like a Scandinavian Rudy to me currently but that we paid an exhorbatant price for.

I think Rudy Gestede is better.

At least with Rudy we get something to laugh at.

What a load of cack. I agree with our league position, as most of us would have accepted where we are today.
However, Cornelius is awful. If he turns into anything other than a poor Gestede, then I'll admit I was wrong.
Puzzling how he can say he's happy with his performance today.

Mackay remains defiant, laments poor goals
Malky Mackay remained defiant over his position as Cardiff City manager despite a 3-0 home loss to Southampton on Thursday.
A brace from Jay Rodriguez and a further goal from Rickie Lambert inside the opening half hour condemned Cardiff to a second consecutive defeat and piled more pressure onto Mackay, whose future has come under scrutiny following a public fall-out with owner Vincent Tan.
After the match, Mackay reiterated that he will remain in charge of the team until told otherwise.
"I have belief in my ability to be the manager here and I'm standing strong to make sure if it's anything to do with me and my staff we'll make sure we stay in this league," he said.
"It's certainly very important that we stop washing our dirty linen in public.
"Our fans have been seen in a great light this season. The atmosphere; the friendliness; the way they're conducting themselves around the country is something they should be proud of and it's not great when we're on the front pages as opposed to the back pages.

I can accept Malky swying 'we are we expected us to be' as the Premiership is a tough league. What i find difficult to accept is the style of play we've seen, the tactics of hoof the ball and defend for 90 minutes, and the lack of a Plan B when tbings are not worming out.
I've no idea what manager can take us forward but it is obvious that Malkys defensive mindset just isn't working.

Malky need not resign now nor he will be sacked. I bet he would be place on gardening leave, until he decide to resign on VT's terms. Meanwhile someone will take over as the "permanent" caretaker manager. So much for defiance.

"We are where we expected to be"....jump forward 5 league games and imo we're gonna be in the bottom 3.
3 away games where we won't get a point and 2 home games against teams around us 1 of which is starting to get some good form together.
With our defensive tactics in games and inability to score we'll be lucky to get 2 points from those 5 games, the second half of the season is gonna be one titanic battle to stave off relegation.
