Malky Mackay warns that row with owner Vincent Tan could threaten Cardiff City's place in the Premier League

Mackay admits he thought he was going to be sacked over the weekend after receiving emailed ultimatum from Tan

Malky Mackay says he was 'deeply upset' with the way he was treated by Vincent Tan last week
By Rob Cole 24th Dec 2013.

Malky Mackay has warned that the simmering row between him and Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan could threaten the club’s Premier League survival.

Mackay offered to hold talks with Tan on Monday to try to improve their relationship after Malaysian billionaire Tan sent a stinging email to his manager allegedly criticising his recruitment, style of play and selection, and calling him to “resign or face the sack”.

Mackay admitted he felt he was going to be sacked after his side’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield at the weekend, only to find he had been given a stay of execution on Sunday thanks to the intervention of the club chairman Mehmet Dalman.
But not even Dalman has been able to get the two protagonists around the table for peace talks even though they were both at Anfield on Saturday and Mackay offered to sit down and iron out the problems on either Monday or Tuesday.

Now the 41-year-old Scot is concerned that the longer the rift is allowed to continue, the longer the odds will be on Cardiff City surviving in the top flight.

“If this situation continues then it will affect the club’s chances of staying in the Premier League. You can’t keep washing your dirty linen in public without it affecting the club.” said Mackay.

“I have a steely determination to make sure we stay up and we have a great set of professionals who are remaining focused on the job. But I am not naive enough to think the players don’t read the papers or watch the news.
“I have to protect them, and we have regular dialogue to let them know how things are, and make sure they remain focused on the job. This is a busy time, but our chances of staying up will be affected.
“I especially feel for the fans because they should be enjoying this season in the Premier League but are being dragged through front-page headlines rather than back pages of the newspapers.”
Mackay revealed that his offer to meet the owner was “declined”.
With Christmas Day following, and then a game against Southampton on Boxing Day, that only leaves Friday as a ‘free day’ for talks.
“I was given an email by the owner which deeply upset me, suggesting I should resign or be sacked. I declined to resign, so after the weekend I expected to be sacked,” said Mackay.
“There are certain areas that have to be addressed after reading what was in that email.
"Until they are resolved, we will have to wait and see.
“When Gethin Jenkins and Alan Whiteley were chief executives, and when TG [Dato Chan Tien Ghee] was chairman, the club worked really well and that was shown by the success we had.
"Mehmet Dalman is a steady hand on the tiller, but it is the owner who makes the decisions because he owns 90 per cent odd of the club.
“All along I’ve been crystal clear that I won’t resign – I love my job here, I love living in Cardiff and I will not resign. I have a steely determination to look after this squad, but it is not in my hands.”
Cardiff are 15th in the Premier League, four points off the relegation zone, but the manager maintains the pressure on him and his players is no greater than it has been all season despite the tension between himself and the owner.
“I have regular dialogue with the players about staying focused on the football.
"This is a busy time and I don’t know how there could be any more pressure than we’ve had in the last six to eight weeks,” admitted Mackay.

"“I am proud to be the manager here and the players, staff and fans are all backing the one way forward.”

Vincent Tan is acting very immature on the whole saga, hes like a spoilt child if he doesn't get his own way he jumps up and down. I'll be honest I thought he was gone before the Liverpool game as David Kerslake did the interview regarding the Liverpool game, I must admit I felt sorry for him as clearly he was thrown into the deep end. Vincent Tan has every chance to make it up to the supporters if he had any respect by saying sorry to Mackay, give him a pay rise, announce we go back blue and our badge back. itsfunny anymore also by all means have our away kit red. that email was absurd to say the least, i think in my lifetime he is by far the best manager ive ever seen at Cardiff hes the man to move us forward, getting in somebody like sven would be a backward step in my opinion :ayatollah: :malky:

Does he not learn. He talks about dragging dirty washing in public, then proceeds to drag out a little more.

I can't believe the masses are lapping the Malky story. He wants out, big style, but wants his cash first, all fair enough....

He will turn up to the next press conference in a BU T shirt. Luckily, I think his professional pride will stop him from not giving 100% to the team, but, he is antagonising Tan as much as possible. The e-mail is Malky's trump card, a constructive dismissal case through the courts is the minimum he can expect but the full pay off of our clubs money is what he wants.

He won't be here for the Arsenal game IMO.

Our premier league place is under threat, if Malky stays or not. Split, divided clubs rarely survive. Tans exit strategy will take years, Malky's may take days.

Tan is about as ham fisted as I could imagine any successful businessman to be. The lack of awareness about the culture difference is shocking. Expecting malky to fall on his sword because thats what he wants is incomprehensible to me. But, it highlights how clueless he is to western culture and practices.
