Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers hails Malky Mackay as 'best manager Cardiff City have ever had' as he slams Vincent Tan again

Saturday 21st Dec 2013

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said if Malky Mackay is sacked the Bluebirds will be losing the best manager in the club’s history.

The former Swansea City boss saw his side move to the top of the Premier League with their 3-1 win over Mackay’s Bluebirds, but the game was marked throughout by passionate vocal support from the travelling fans for their manager.

Cardiff majority shareholder Vincent Tan was in the director’s box at Anfield and has issued a ‘resign or be sacked’ ultimatum to the very popular Mackay. It is uncertain what the future now holds for the Cardiff boss.

But Rodgers, who earlier in the week said Tan struck him as a man who knew nothing about football, sprang to the defence of his opposite number here. The pair are firm friends with Mackay being Rodgers' assistant when both men were at Watford.

“It is a sad day. Malky is a wonderful professional, he is the best manager in the history of Cardiff City,” said Rodgers.

“He got them promoted to the Premier League, which was worth £90m to the club, and they are now in the most competitive league in the world. They will stay up with him at the helm and he finds himself under immense scrutiny for doing an outstanding job. The dignity he has shown in the circumstances has been remarkable.”

The Liverpool boss had met with Mackay ahead of the game between the two and said the love Mackay had for the Bluebirds had been very evident.

“I spent some time with him. We are very close,” said Rodgers.

“Football aside, it was difficult. He loves Cardiff, he loves being there. The job he has done there is remarkable. He is a big, proud man and proud of what he’s done at Cardiff and it’s sad for me to see someone who is a super professional in that situation.

“It’s not everyone at Cardiff, it’s one guy who feels he wants to change things, and he’ll be losing the best manager in Cardiff’s history. He will be losing a man destined to mange at the top level for a long time to come.

“We all know as managers that the sack is just around the corner, it never used to be like that in this country, but the sadness is it has got nothing to do with results.”

On the pitch it was two goals from Reds striker Luis Suarez that helped sink Cardiff with the Uruguayan also setting up Raheem Sterling for the other Liverpool goal. Jordon Mutch scored with a second-half header for the visitors.

Rodgers praised Suarez, but said he was delighted with how the whole of hie men were performing this campaign.

“It was an outstanding team performance,” added Rodgers.

“In the first-half we had plenty of momentum and fluidity and we might have had even more goals.

“We let Cardiff have a slack goal which gave them the momentum, but overall we scored three and might have had more. We know Luis is world class, but he was also unselfish here and showed what a team player he also is.”

Actually, Fred Stewart who won us the FA Cup and Charity Shield in 1927,took us to another Cup Final in 1925 and narrowly missed out on being League Champions in 1924, is our most successful Manager. Malky is second, as no other City Manager won anything as important as the Championship.
