Cardiff City to appoint 'big name young foreign manager'

Mackay is in charge for today's game against Liverpool but his days at the club are numbered

Cardiff City are set to go for a big-name young foreign manager as they step up the hunt for a successor to Malky Mackay.

Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan last night flew into London for talks with club chairman Mehmet Dalman to discuss if there is any future for Mackay as manager of Wales’ capital city club.

But although Dalman is a big backer of Mackay, he privately accepts the Scot’s days in charge of Cardiff are over and has been given the go-ahead by Tan to lead the hunt for the new boss.

We understand Tan was ready to appoint former Bluebirds chief Dave Jones as interim manager with immediate effect, but was persuaded against that course of action by Dalman.

Instead, the Bluebirds are believed to have looked at a number of European targets, each of whom meet the criteria of being young, ambitious, big name, highly-respected and foreign.

The man understood to be at the top of the Bluebirds’ wish-list is Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, early favourite with the bookmakers.

Solskjaer, also heavily linked with the West Brom vacancy, has impressed the Cardiff hierarchy with the work he performed as an Old Trafford coach and in leading Norwegian side Molde to back to back League titles.

Molde have confirmed they have received two approaches from British clubs for Solskjaer’s services, the former United UEFA Champions League winner having declined the opportunity to sign an extension to his contract.

It is understood Solskjaer would be keen to join Cardiff, but only if given concrete assurances on issues such as Tan’s involvement and the job description.

If the move for Solskjaer falls through – with Cardiff and West Brom in a battle for his services – we understand the Bluebirds have put other European targets on their list. One is understood to be Dutch, the other Spanish.

A further option is Bluebirds legend Craig Bellamy, but the Cardiff Board think this is too early for him to become boss.

Dalman postponed a holiday abroad yesterday to deal head on with the Cardiff crisis, dissuading Tan from appointing Jones and persuading him to have one last round of negotiations over Mackay.

Tan has issued a ‘resign or be sacked’ email ultimatum to Mackay, who was absent from yesterday’s traditional pre-match Press conference ahead of the Liverpool clash.

Solskjaer seems to be the chosen one! What a total mess, I hope we manage to pull off a major shock today which will make Tan look a bigger plum. Lets hope the players put all their heart into it for Malky's sake! :malky: :malky: :malky:

Second asistant grounds man from Mongolia?
At21 he has a promising career on grass surface so tan thinks he has a top flight manager in the making.

Solsjaer has definitely got the credentials, he watched hundreds of PL games at Man Utd.

Malky in, Tan out... I took a red scarf as I knew it would be useful one day, never been worn and being thrown on the pitch on boxing day hopefully with hundreds if others.

I can't see it being olly, unproven, and sensible guy who will listen to SAF. I could see SAF telling him to steer clear of Tan, choosing the wrong club can finish you before you start. Same with players

But it just goes to show that we have the correct set up and in place system to take managers on and make them successful, and in the meantime push our club that much further.
And yes they end up going to bigger clubs thanks to being successful and we get millions in compo and go out and do it all again.
