West Brom linked with move for Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay as uncertainty increases around manager's future
19 Dec 2013

Reports in the Midlands say the Premiership club are monitoring the current situation at Cardiff as they begin their hunt for a new manager

West Brom are monitoring the Malky Mackay situation at crisis-hit Cardiff City with the Baggies keeping the Scot's name in the frame to replace Steve Clarke.

Clarke was axed by Albion in the aftermath of Cardiff's 1-0 win in South Wales last weekend and are in the hunt for a new man having placed former Cardiff midfielder Keith Downing in temporary charge.

West Brom chairman is said to be a fan of Mackay and our sister website, birminghammail.co.uk , are also reporting the Baggies are keeping tabs on the growing row between Mackay and controversial owner Tan.

But both the Birmingham Mail and ourselves understand it would be unlikely West Brom would look to pay the £3m compensation required to release Mackay from his Cardiff contract, especially at a time where the rift between the former Watford man and Tan has led to growing speculation he could be on his way from Cardiff City Stadium.

Mackay has again insisted this week that he will not resign but he remains the bookies' favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post after both Clarke and Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas joined Ian Holloway and Martin Jol on the managerial casualty list for the season.

Mackay is third favourite for the West Brom job behind Gianfranco Zola, who quit as Watford boss on Monday, and Molde's former Manchester United star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

surely the 3million is built into the contract on the assumption that Malky would be a valued commodity as happens with some players...............i dont think he is valued by Tan.............just like a player with a 40 mill release clause, should he become surplus there is nothing to stop the club allowing him to go free or at a reduced fee..........i think this is the scenario Tan has been waiting for.......a club asks to speak to Malky....our club agree... Malky gets to say by agreeing Cardiff showed they didnt really want him to stay......and by going to talk with another club ,Tan gets to say Malky has shown he didnt really want to stay....

Don't think it's cause they couldn't afford to, just that Pierce wouldn't want to spend 3 million getting a manager. Also doubtful he'd get much money to spend in Jan either. Sure Malky would wait for an approach from a better club than WBA before leaving, despite all his troubles here.

This is a way out for Evil Tan. He won't sack Malky due to compensation but surely will leave him go to WBA?

We'll look forward to seeing Tan in the dugout pulling his trousers to his chest at the next match

It's ironic that if Cardiff didn't have a manager at the minute, and you looked at the names of potential managers who may be available, the name that would probably be at the top of our list would be Malky. Don't think it will be long before he is managing a bigger club than ours.
