Why Cardiff Will NOT Get Relegated…

Mon Dec 16, 2013 1:52 pm

So after 7 consecutive home games against teams in the top 10, we finally played our first home game against a team in the bottom 10 and won! To add a bit of optimism and Christmas cheer off the back of this result, I read a bit of analysis which shows the average points scored by teams in the bottom 10 so far this season:

Home points won v Top 10: 0.7 per game
Away points won v Top 10: 0.5 per game

Home points won v Bottom 10: 1.8 per game
Away points won v Bottom 10: 0.9 per game

As you can see there's not much difference playing the top teams home or away when it comes to grabbing the odd point. Home advantage does, however, matter A LOT (virtually 1 point per game) when teams have been playing their nearest rivals.

Only Cardiff, Villa and Sunderland have more than 5 home games left against the bottom 10. We have 8 (Hull have 2)!!! If the bottom 10 sides continue to average the same points per game as above, only Villa and us would get more than 40 points, with 34 points being enough to survive!
