Whittingham and Medel

Mon Dec 16, 2013 9:37 am

Lets start first by being honest about him. He was woeful against Stoke, Terrible against Palace, and realistically, could and perhaps should have been dropped for the game on Saturday.

Add to that, his first have performance was woeful. However, how anyone can boo our own players during the match beggars belief! Not just any player mind you, someone who has (despite dips in form) consistantly produced for us over a long period of time. He has won us countless games on his own and been a model professional to boot when more talented players around him havent been.

Im glad he scored the winner saturday, if only to shut the moany fucker behind me up!

Long term his position in the side might be at risk. I dont think hes good enough to play in a two man midfield, and he isnt a natural left sided player either. His strength is in the middle with another 2 players.

Just to highlight the difference between fans views on players at the moment, we have Gary Medel.

A player who needs to lose weight for a start, Someone who also had poor games against Stoke and Palace, someone who has been directly responsible for us conceding two goals this season (free kick V villa and Corner V man united). On Saturday he picked up a nonsense nooking with a reckless challenge, giving West Brom a free kick in a dangerous position.

He gets applauded by some for that, but what would have happened if whittingham had made that challenge?

Recently people have called me all sorts on here for trying to be constructive in explain why i think Malky might not be for us in the long term, i wonder if some of these people are the ones booing Whittingham during the game on Saturday!

Whittingham is not good enough for the Premier League.

He doesn't even look interested at times. More fight in a goldfish.

You're right Paul, Whitts was poor at Stoke and Palace and he wasn't the only one!

It always seem to be the same players who gets targeted by some of our fans, like Cowie for example!

I would never boo any of our players whilst they're on the field and playing for us, but I have to say though, there were loads of people moaning about Whitts's first half performance on Saturday and I'd have to say with some justification!

I've always stuck up for Whitts in the past, believing that he's always tried to chip the ball over his opponent's foot instead of going in hard on occasion, in order to make progress up the field, but I had a cracking view of him not putting his foot in where it might hurt on 3 or 4 separate occasions against West Brom and that's why some of our fans were moaning!

Fans will forgive people for making mistakes, but they won't forgive players who don't appear to be trying and who don't appear to be getting stuck in, when the need arises, this is why Medel will always be a fan's favourite and Whitts will split the fan base much deeper!

Personally, I was delighted that Whitts scored on Saturday, but I would have been just as delighted, if the ball had gone in off one of West Brom's defender's arses and even more delighted had Campbell or Odemwigie scored, as I had them both down as first goalscorer and for us to win 1-0! :( :)

Where do you sit btw, as I might have been the moaning fecker behind you? :)

We love and respect a trier, someone that plays with passion, pride and determination,i often get the impression that Whitts cant be arsed, and appears quite disinterested in many games I've watched

Spot on. Some people think Gary is better than he really is. The people around me moan about Whitttingham all game for not diving into challenges, yet complain when he makes a foul.
Personally I think Whitts and Medel in a 2 man midfield would be our best option. But it's difficult to see any reason to drop Mutch at the moment.

Whitts was poor on Saturday if I am honest, and his goal will cover up a lot of the floors. I do have to say after the game I said his goal was easy to score thinking he had loads of space. After watching replays I didn't realise how much of a difficult header it was to make and well done to him for that.

On Medel, I still think he's class but at times he runs round like a headless 2 year old chasing the ball and not actually thinking about what he's doing.

The challenge wear he was booked is a prime example. He ran at three different west brom players chasing the ball and they all skinned him and when the ball went down the wing he still chased after it, and because he couldn't get the ball he took the man out.

You can look at it another way though in that he put the West brom players under pressure and never gave up, hence why the crowd (myself included) gave him a good cheer.
