The clubs shocking merchandising department

Sun Dec 15, 2013 1:58 pm

I was chatting with a friend at the game yesterday, who happens to manage a store at Cardiff Airport. He is in charge of bringing in all merchandising into the store. As a big City fan and ST holder, he dearly wanted to stock City merchandise as well as WRU and WFA and leading Rugby and (unfortunately) Swansea City merchandise!

He told me of his frustration that of all the organisations mentioned it was only Cardiff City who had failed to even respond to his request for a meeting to ascertain the feasibility of stocking our club merchandise! He has spoke to Borley, who referred him to Julian Jenkins, he has emailed others within the marketing department, but not even an acknowledgement has been received.

Now, the club may feel that it's not worth their while financially, but surely we should have a marketing presence in a store that is situated in the gateway Airport to Wales and especially Cardiff? And even more so when our main football rivals have a presence in there. To the normal traveller, I would imagine, on seeing no presence, they would think that the club just aren't as popular or do not have the fan base of the other represented clubs.

It, just struck me as another example of the poor way the clubs commercial and marketing platforms are run.

We should have more places selling merchandise, but it's all shit anyway so I'm not too bothered.

Maybe it's something to do with the man upstairs?

It's pretty pathetic, the one in town is awful. I used to spend spend a fortune in the club shop at Xmas and haven't even looked this year.

Let's all be honest with ourselves, it's always been shit. Nothing to do with Tan or the rebrand.

If we were still blue, the only difference would be the colour of the tat on the shelves.

It's true, but I think the club have a good opportunity now to sell red and blue to fans. Problem is products are expensive but cheap quality.

Your right mate , regardless of the quality of the goods the club should jump at the opportunity of marketing the club in Wales only airport .
This is baffling !

correct, the quality has never been the best for whatever reason but that shouldn't be the reason not work with local retailers. I would imagine that the Airport is one of the main buying areas for buying presents before they return home.?

I'm confused here, I have been through Cardiff airport twice in the last 2 months and they are clearly selling city shirts, not any other merchandise but they have got city shirts, (red of course) but adult sizes as well as kids. I didn't see any jak shirts though ?

Fair enough, but I bought one full blue kit and two extra shirts just over a week ago. Its frustrating if you can't get one but isn't it just high demand over Christmas rather than anything more sinister.

I don't know how many outlets there are in the Airport, as I never use it, but as I have said, my mate manages one that stocks all those teams I have mentioned. The commercial manager from the Jacks has overseen their stock order personally. Reluctantly, my mate, who is a massive City fan, has to admit that they have been brilliant and extremely professional. Maybe, they see it as a fantastic opportunity to have a presence in Cardiff, under our noses so to speak, don't know and our club, don't have the same motivation. However, our club, have shown no interest or motivation to have their merchandise in the store. They haven't even had the decency to email him with a reason. When he phoned the commercial department as a follow up, he was actually told, that the person dealing with it, has so many emails that they just probably haven't had time yet. That is a joke and the worst excuse anyone should tell customers or commercial partners. This is weeks later, by the way.
The last thing you want to do is slag off your own club, but these type of situations quickly become public and quickly reflect on the club, which is why they should always respond professionally, which they clearly have not. I have stuck it on here, because like it or not, the club seem quicker to respond to things on here and other message boards than when you actually go through their own channels of communication. I hope someone from the club is alerted and actually responds to him

Both mate in my eyes October the blue kit was out which is to late and its sold out with no orders in u til after exmas.
Disappointing to be honest also the kit is on sale in dw sports the red and yellow only. The shop management said ccfc have put restrictions on the blue kit which means they aint allowed to sell em even though they want to. Make what you want of it.

Re: The clubs shocking merchandising department

They were selling mystery bag things over halloween. A fiver and it could be 'anything'. RRP was 30 quid. I bought 2. When they arrived they were both the same. A lollipop and a few stickers. Fkin shit!!!!.

Sack puma off for a start. Our shirts are crap compared to others. I just wear a blue jumper to games as my bellamy blue 1 from this year is crap and uncomfortable.

Re: The clubs shocking merchandising department

If anyone is looking for blue cardiff shirts theres a website called aliexpress.com. its basically a Chinese ebay. if you are going to buy on there only buy clothing because nearly everything on there is fake. the shirts are around £12 ands free postage but it takes around 15 days to arrive. when using it be careful because it is like ebay so some people may be on there to scam you. sellers have rating so if you are going to buy from them look at their rating and reviews. ive bought a kit on there and it was fine.

Re: The clubs shocking merchandising department

Sun Dec 15, 2013 10:07 pm

We've been 're-branded', so what's the point.

Cardiff airport is owned by the egg- loving Welsh government.

We're Cardiff City. It's not about merchandising. It's about the football, and our traditions. If we manage to save those, then we can start to think about selling memorabilia afterwards.

Do we really want people to see, and buy, the sort of crap that is on sale in the club shop? Surely not!

I went into the club shop Saturday afternoon before the game to exchange an adult size blue shirt that I'd bought a couple of weeks earlier for a different size!

They weren't able to give me the size I wanted, but was told that they're expecting a new delivery after Xmas!

I went to the little shop under the Ninian stand on Saturday and got my blue cap with what I call the Sam Hammam badge on - not my first choice but better than red, which I wouldn't want. Had loads of blue stuff in there.

Agree with the general point that the merchandise could be a lot more attractive than it is, and that has been the case for many, many years.
