Peter Whittingham: Delighted to see Cardiff bounce back
Cardiff City goalscorer Peter Whittingham believes it was crucial his side bounced back against West Brom following a "harsh" result against Crystal Palace.
The midfielder headed home the only goal of the game in the second half as Malky Mackay's men prevailed 1-0, elevating them to 14th in the Premier League standings.
Cardiff enjoyed an energetic start in south Wales before the game descended into a scrappy midfield battle as neither side seized control of the clash.
The breakthrough did come in the second half, however, as Whittingham lost his marker to head beyond Boaz Myhill in the Baggies goal and earn a much-needed victory.
Peter Whittingham
"I got hit from the side and then I was facing the other way, I didn't even see it go in to be honest, just heard the crowd go up."
"It was nice to get a goal, especially after last week against Crystal Palace, it was a harsh result on us," he told Sky Sports.
"I thought we bounced back today really well, I thought we dominated for most parts."
Just after the hour had passed, Cardiff winger Craig Noone raced down the right-hand side before curling a precision cross into the box, where Whittingham lost his marker and twisted a fierce header beyond Myhill.
The 29-year-old remained on the floor in the aftermath of the goal but quashed any fears of injury, claiming it was simply fatigue that kept him down.
Cardiff's Peter Whittingham says he is pleased by the character his side showed during their 1-0 victory over West Brom.
"I was just too tired to get back up, to be honest," he joked.
"I got hit from the side and then I was facing the other way, I didn't even see it go in to be honest, I just heard the crowd go up."
Whittingham's goal gave the game a thoroughly welcome injection of energy, not necessarily in Cardiff's favour, however, as they were forced to repel a late comeback from the Baggies.
Cardiff survived the onslaught, with the plaudits going to goalkeeper David Marshall who made a superb save - switching directions and diving - to deny Shane Long from point-blank range.
"Marshy made a great save towards the end but apart from that I didn't really think they created too much," Whittingham said.
"I thought we played well, I thought we deserved the win.
"It was a massive win, especially after that Crystal Palace result, we needed to bounce back and we needed three points. We showed great character and it was a great result."
Victory means Cardiff are now four points clear of the relegation zone ahead of their trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool next Saturday.

That goal will do Whitts no end of good - a real boost for him.

Hope so as he was struggling to make any impact again before it. Personally, I still think he needs a rest, but I really don't think it helps Whitts having Taylor behind him - neither have any pace but Whitts seems to be forever covering him as darts forward before stopping on the half way line and leaving Whitts to track back.

I totally agree, yesterday there wasn't a threat on the left hand side as both have no pace, Whits delivery is not up to the standard it should be either.

Although delighted to win, I'm not sure its good for us that Whittingham scored! He had a poor game as usual yesterday and as we saw Malky had the opportunity in the media to go over board in his praise for him to vindicate his constant inclusion. Both he and Taylor are poor but Whitts kept out Kim yesterday and thats criminal.

Whitts has looked tired recently, but that goal will have done him the world of good. Crowd were on his back a fair bit yesterday, and rightfully so as the guy wasn't chasing balls and was pulling out of 50/50s, but thank god he scored. I'd put a confident Whitts in my team every week, not the player we saw at Stoke and Palace.

We are now in the premier league, giving possession away needlessly or being caught out of position is a crime in Malkys very rigid defensive system.
Charging onto tackles and being skinned gets you relegated. Not being able to control the ball and pass it to a team mate gets you relegated. For all of Whitts "bottled "tackles Marshall had to make 2 saves all game, none came from Whitts supposed act of cowardice.
The top level game has moved on, unfortunately a lot of our fans are clueless. I am watching a game now when a converted 40 year old winger and small non aggressive albeit average partner are running the midfield for Man U.
The Charlie Oatway or Paul Ramsey days are long gone........

Whitts bottled tackles. Thats the difference. No one is expecting him to charge in but when he gets to the ball first then pulls his foot out, thats pathetic. We cant afford luxury where we are in the league.

Who can say if we would have lost if he didnt play? The whole game would have been different. We may have won 2-0 for all we know.
He had been spoken to at HT yesterday as he came out much more commited 2nd half.
