" Premier League: Cardiff manager Malky Mackay hails Peter Whittingham after West Brom win "
By Ben Hampshire -
' Malky Mackay: Delighted with the performance of Peter Whittingham '
Malky Mackay saluted the efforts of Peter Whittingham after a rare headed goal from the midfielder gave Cardiff a crucial 1-0 win over West Brom.
Whittingham converted with force at the far post from Craig Noone's precision cross in the 65th minute to give Cardiff a deserved three points which gave them some valuable breathing space over the bottom three.
The 29-year-old has been a Bluebirds favourite for some time and delivered at a crucial time for Cardiff as they elevated themselves into 14th in the top-flight standings.
Whittingham has responded superbly this season and Mackay hailed the efforts he has made in adapting to his return to the Premier League.
' Mackay hails big win '
"I'm delighted for him because he's been one of my most consistent performers this year," Mackay told reporters.
"He had a period out of the side near the end of last season but really came back in the summer with a renewed belief in his own ability.
"He worked hard on his body to survive in the Premier League in midfield and he's showing that this season."
Although Whittingham is not renowned for headed goals, Mackay spoke of his memories of being on the wrong end of the playmaker's head.
"I'm delighted for the players. It's an important win for us against a team who are around us in the league."
"Peter scored a headed goal against me when I was the manager of Watford about four years ago," he said.
"I told him that. I said, 'do you remember the last time you scored a header?' and he went, 'against you at Watford'."
After a run of five games without a win, Cardiff entered the clash teetering on the brink of the relegation zone but have started to distance themselves with three points.
The hosts enjoyed a lively start in the South Wales driving rain, winning numerous set-pieces in the opening exchanges, and Mackay believes his side were deserved winners on the day.
Cardiff¿s Peter Whittingham says he is pleased by the character his side showed during their 1-0 victory over West Brom.
"I thought we started really well and put West Brom on the back foot right away. It gave us that momentum," he added.
"I knew at half-time we had to be patient and eventually it would come.
"I'm delighted for the players. It's an important win for us against a team who are around us in the league."
Mackay will now take his men to Anfield to face in-form Liverpool next Saturday, before a Boxing Day date with Southampton back at the Cardiff City Stadium.

So you've never been a fan of his? Even when he was top scorer in 2009/10?
But as you've said, Malky is the manager. Fortunately

I liked Whitts, but always thought Whits was to laid back, I rate him as a Championship player.

Whitts is a quality player and IMO the second best midfielder we have, behind Medel.
People are expecting Whitts to go diving into these tackles he's never going to win, yet complain like f**k when he makes a foul. However when Medel goes flying in and gets booked he's been unlucky. I don't get it, can Whitts ever win?
Sat Dec 14, 2013 9:35 pm
Being laid back suits him in the prem you get more time on the ball

Hang on, you first said that you're not a fan of his, then you say that you like him? Make your mind up, man

Of course, this image of him as a laid-back individual is a common criticism. Simply because he doesn't steam into tackles à la Gary Medel. But it doesn't make him a worse player.

Whites needs someone to share dead ball situations with, it's shocking that it's just him, we're lucky that he's that good.

Christ Annis, I know you can be stubborn and nobody likes to be wrong, but it's time you reassess your opinion about Whittingham!
Sat Dec 14, 2013 9:51 pm
When used correctly he is a top player.

Whitts, still goes missing in my opinion in many matches.
On his day he is class, but on his day, and in my opinion thats not often enough for me, but I must be wrong as Malky raves about him.

I am not a fan, because Whitts is not consistent, but Malky sees different.

Wouldn't have been on the pitch by the time he'd scored if I'd been the manager! What do I know? Mind you did you see his half hearted attempt to chase Aresnal and Ramsey down for their last goal?
Sat Dec 14, 2013 9:57 pm
Everyone stop sucking Whittinghams cock, yes he scored the winner but amount of 50/50s he shit out on today and general play was shocking.

Well, thank God you're not the manager, then!
As for Ramsey's second goal two weeks ago, the game was over by then. But why not single just him out? What about others?

Who doesn't go missing in big matches though?
Annis, if Whitts didn't go missing sometimes then he'd be playing for a better club than us, his inconsistency is the reason he is playing for a team like us.
Not to mention, we don't have many non defensive players at all who aren't inconsistent. Campbell, Odemwingie, Kim, Gunnarsson, even Medel for a few recent games.
Sat Dec 14, 2013 10:14 pm
He goes missing less than the Ninian Stand, where the fcuk were you today, The Malaysian kids made more noise......
Sat Dec 14, 2013 10:51 pm
I like Whitts but lately his set pieces have been very poor and I agree with Annis in that he sometimes disappears. Fair play to him for his goal though, he played fairly well today.
Sat Dec 14, 2013 11:47 pm
The ignorance in the OP is startling.
Sun Dec 15, 2013 12:03 am
whitts is a confidence player and it doesnt help the moans and groans from the crowd every time he doesnt do something great. I've got people around me that slag him off all game. For me her a ccfc legend.
Sun Dec 15, 2013 12:06 am
whitts is one of those players that would be more suited to the spanish leagues . great technique ,skill and wide vision in abundance but slow in the prem league what with the emphasis of power and pace in the modern game over here
Sun Dec 15, 2013 12:06 am
It's common knowledge he plays better further forward. But as we don't play that system anymore, he has to fit in somewhere. Way too good to be left on the bench given the other options we have. He might not be as consistent as he used to be, but his delivery and passing are still as good as anyone else we have.
Sun Dec 15, 2013 8:20 am
Most of our fans are stuck in a lower league mentality and dont rate Whitts cos he doesnt fly into challenges.
Said fans havent got a f*cking clue.
Sun Dec 15, 2013 8:52 am
If he flew into any of these so called 50 50s and got injured for a few games, trust me, we'd all miss him.
He's a fantastic player with more vision than most of the team, and what a great servant to our club. The guy should be hailed as a club legend who should get into anybodies all time greatest city 11.
Sun Dec 15, 2013 9:20 am
Great goal by whitts yesterday but up until then he was dire, he tends to go missing far too often for my liking.
Sun Dec 15, 2013 9:48 am
He was shit beside the goal. One goal doesn't change that, but it was a very good goal and one I didn't expect from him.
I'm f*cking tired of playing central midfielders out wide, or even worse, strikers. Just sign some f*cking players for the right positions so everyone can play in their best positions.
And give Cornelius a chance for f**k sake. Maynard is just a slower Campbell.
Sun Dec 15, 2013 9:58 am
My opinion for what it's worth, Whittingham is a class act when played in the correct position on the field. He needs to be utilised as an attacking central midfielder where he can hurt teams and score goals because there can't be many better finishers as far as midfielders go in the league at the moment i.e. He knows where the net is but he is rarely played in a position on the field where we can see the best of him.
Sun Dec 15, 2013 10:34 am
I think Mario Politelli got it spot on. Most of our fans are stuck in a lower league mentality. Whitts is certainly nowhere near a legend. He'd be ok playing for Bury or Rochdale but Premier League? Come on wakey wakey!!!
Sun Dec 15, 2013 10:43 am
So he scores a headed goal and he is the best thing since sliced bread. Laughable, he bottled virtually every challenge yesterday, and as for laid back it's more like bone idle. As for his legendary set pieces for sometime now they have been crap. Time to get over "powder puff Pete" and realise a few years ago he was a good championship player no more, no less and he will never be a good premiership player. As for Malky and his comments about him being one of his most consistant players, it just shows what bollacks some managers come out with, no doubt taken from the "Football manager's book of excuses"
Sun Dec 15, 2013 10:56 am
Great headed goal but whits was piss poor yesterday. I agree with many people, i would have taken him off at half time.
