Cardiff City defender Kevin McNaughton admits he's looking at a permanent move away from Bluebirds
Friday 13th Dec 2013

While currently enjoying his spell on loan at Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers, Cardiff City hero Kevin McNaughton says he's looking for a permanent move before his current contract expires

Cardiff City favourite Kevin McNaughton has admitted he's looking to nail down a move away from South Wales before his contract ends next summer.

The Scot, who spent seven straight seasons in the Bluebirds defence before being loaned to Bolton Wanderers when his parent club were promoted to the Premier League, says he's enjoying life at the Reebok Stadium and he would love to stay put.

McNaughton , 31, said: “I’d like to get a couple of years somewhere.

“I’ve said a few times now that I’ve played a lot of football in my career and there’s nothing worse than not being involved and just sitting and watching results come in.

“If I can get somewhere nailed down where I have at least got a chance of featuring, and somewhere that’s settled, because it’s not ideal moving my family up and down.

“I haven’t spoken to Cardiff to be completely honest but the gaffer (Dougie Freedman) has had a quiet word and he says he’d love to keep me for a bit longer if that is possible.

“When the loan finishes I’ll have some discussions with Cardiff and I’m out of contract at the end of the season so I’ll have to get something sorted out.”

But family man McNaughton, who was carried off the pitch by jubilant fans as Malky Mackay's men clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, will find it hard to leave South Wales.

He said: “I’ve had my young lad just start school so it’s not just thinking about myself, there’s quite a lot in there.

“I’ll discuss it all with Cardiff when my loan finishes but I would love to stay here. I feel pretty settled.”

McNaughton has been joined in the Trotters' team by fellow Cardiff loanee Joe Mason, who scored on his full debut against Huddersfiled Town.

Of the youngster, who made his name by scoring for the Bluebirds in the League Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley in 2011, McNaughton said: “He’s a quality player. If you speak to anyone at Cardiff they will tell you just how good he is.

“I’m a bit surprised that he hasn’t been involved in the Premier League.

“But that’s down to Cardiff and it has worked out well for Bolton because what you saw against Huddersfield sums him up, he does that every day in training.

“It’s no surprise to me but a few of the lads came up to me after that game and said that he’d impressed them.

“I think he is quality and hopefully he can take that into the Wigan game as well.

“He’s found himself out on loan but I think he’ll be a Premier League player, no doubt in my mind. He’s got a lot of time on his side.

“Maybe he needs a few more games before making that step up. I think he’s good enough to play up there right now and it would have been good to see him in the Premier League team but it’s to Bolton’s benefit.

“If he can get another season under his belt with 20-30 appearances then it will stand him in good stead.”

Good luck to him, not sure why Malky gave him that contract if he had no intentions of ever using him.

Absolute legend and true gent :ayatollah:

I can see where he is coming from and as gutted as we will all be when he goes, it was obviously just around the corner from the moment Malky put him on the loan list.

Best of luck in the future Super Kev.. Teach Joey a little bit more and hopefully he too can become a City legend :malky:

I think it was out of sentiment maybe, and it was before we signed Theo Catherine. It would've been harsh to boot him out soon as we get promoted. Just my opinion of course.
Good Luck Super Kev wherever you end up :ayatollah:

I'm impressed with how KTC has performed for us, but I'll be sad to see Kev Mc go; in an ideal world, he'd have made one or two Prem appearances for us - especially after the years he's given us.

Thought he may have got some game time in one of the first couple of games, shame for him not to play in the prem after all the hard work getting there!
