Proportional Representation - Sludge?

Fri May 07, 2010 2:35 pm

Looking at the number of votes cast and where they went it seems to me that if the UK did have proportional representation as some have advocated then the BNP who look like they've come fifth behind the 3 main parties and UKIP would be having a few seats. If we did have this system then they'd have more MP's than the other "nationalist" parties such as SNP, sinn Fein and little old PC.

I'm fairly sure that most of the folks advocating PR are the same folk that are venomous in their opposition to the BNP, funny old world Eh?

Actually it's not funny, there appear to be 8.6 million complete morons in the country. How the hell anyone can vote labour after the carnage they've caused is beyond belief. Its solely down to their complete and utter incompetance that we're going to have suffer several years of very tough times.

If we did this nothing would ever get done, because you'd need 51% of the votes to be able to do anything at all. Politicians will become more corrupt, striking deals and backstabbing others, it'd be a mess.

I don't think much will get done now anyway with a "hung" parliament. Likely to see another election sooner rather later I would have thought as I really can't see labour fitting into too well with Lib Dems and the Torries are miles away from lib dems.

Thats why I put Sludge's name in the header as he had some thoughts on the "hung parliament" scenario. I believe, but am not sure, I was 11 the last time this happened, that tradition gives the siting pm the option to form the new government if he gather enough support. This would be a disaster for the country, as brown and little gang of wierdo's will do anything they can to remain in power. Again be interesting to hear Sludge's thoughts, Clegg for Chancellor perhaps? Brown would have to go as part of the deal I would have thought but the rest of labour party are single celled organisms so who would replace him? Harriet? Good socialist name that.

If there was a PR electoral system then quite rightly your vote would be reflected the overall % that party registered. If that vote was for the BNP then so be it that is democracy.

What I don't like is my vote counting for f**k all because I live in a constituency where the same party wins all the time for the benefit of a ‘stable Government able to get things done’. In simple terms you could get the same thing from a dictatorship, take the vote away and you would get a stable Government able to 'get things done.' I don't want that I want a vote that 'counts' I don't want to be disenfranchised.

The WAG and the Scottish Parliament have worked on a coalition and minority Government basis for the past 2 years, yet either Wales or Scotland has ground to a halt. What is spoken about the PR system is absolute nonsense. What happens with hung Parliaments is that politicians learn how to work together for the greater good, rather than one ideology holding power for a decade or so before handing over to another once the electorate gets bored with them

I think PR is a good idea

the bnp are full of shit but other countries in europe have pr and they have input from all areas of the political spectrum, even if peopleliek me dont agree with their extreme views

same with the european parliament

pr doesnt lead to the world exploding

in fact we are hopefully moving towards what most modern democracies have ..PR

people can be as angry as they want about gordon brown but the fact is that the tories FAILED to win the election

dont blame that on the people who dont vote the way you vote

thats democracy !!!!

and all this talk of pr not working isnt based on any facts from what I have read on here

Cheers Sludge, sorry for the delay in replying internet and telly got fucked by a lightening strike. I wasn't taking the piss and was a bit behind the times. As a sensible lefty and a pro PR person the BNP would now be looking at a few seats in the government as would UKIP. A more considered response would be appreciated, socialist v torry isn't what I expected, hey all went to the same schools after all!
