Malky Mackay set to look at at Cardiff City striking department in January transfer window
9th Dec 2013

But after defeat at Crystal Palace the Bluebirds boss has warned that not too much pressure should be put on frontman Andreas Cornelius

Malky Mackay warns of putting too much pressure on Danish striker Andreas Cornelius

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay is set to look at his striking options in next month’s transfer window.

Following his side’s poor 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace the Bluebirds boss was unhappy that the few chances his men had created were wasted.

Next month Mackay may get the chance to add some firepower to his ranks, but he warned it could be difficult getting the right man.

“We are constantly looking at our striking area,” said Mackay.

“But at this level clinical centre-forwards who are proven cost £20m to £25m and even at that level people still query them.

“At this level that is not an easy position to fill.

“Stepping into the Premier League is not easy. To put in a player who is going to get you 20 goals in the Premier League teams are looking all over the world for that.

“The search is always on to find players who can score goals.”

When it comes to his forwards Mackay has been boosted by the return to fitness of young Danish striker Andreas Cornelius who signed this simmer from FC Copenhagen.

But with the striker still only 20 years old Mackay warned not too much responsibility could yet be placed on his young shoulders.

“It’s helping to have Andreas back now, but he is a long-term option,” said Mackay.

“He’s someone we have on a long contract and he’s young. We’ve got potential there, we’ve not got a proven, hit-the-ground-running striker. That’s not what £7m gets you that’s what £25m gets you in the Premier League. We have young potential here to add to the squad.”

When it comes to doing business next month Mackay will be without his former head of recruitment Iain Moody who is now the new Sporting Director at Palace.

Despite that Mackay insisted he still has the team in place to pull off the necessary signings.

“I’ve got a good group of people around me. There was a team, Iain was part of that team, but we’ve got the rest of the team still involved. Myself and the coaches are still very much involved.”

“And I do everything through my chairman Mehmet Dalman. I talk to the chairman every day.”

Of the defeat at Palace Mackay admitted his team need to improve.

“It is always disappointing when you lose,” added Mackay.

“Overall we want to be better than we were in this game.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, with a big crowd right on top of the pitch and a new manager.

“That gives them impetus and the battling qualities that are going to come with that, none of that surprised us.

“It was one of those days when you knew you were going to be up against it and when we got chances we had to take them.”

he got to solve his tactics of providing chances for a striker 1st... but yes we need wingers firstly before a striker tbh!

I reckon we need to be looking for both, Maynard and Campbell not Premiership Quality in my opinion, Top Championship players. But to be fair, no service from our team.

I agree the striking department isn't the best but it's not bad, we need forward players to support them, with 1 up front and no one around them they're too isolated and just get bullied off the ball every time

Better wingers than cowie and f*cking whittingham we need for f**k sake you can put Luis Suarez in our team but if we create nothing then we ain't gonna score , this is getting beyond a joke now

This is what happens when you spend so much on so little instead of making the most out of the loan/free transfer systems. Figeuroa and Huddlestone would've been cheap additions who would dramatically improve our squad depth in defence and midfield, then work on the wings and strikers.

Odemwingie is our only proven good striker and even then he plays better when he's out of position, and Campbell is an inconsistent little f**k. Maynard isn't good enough in general and Cornelius still has time to prove himself. Just sign someone on loan to help get us through the season.

The fact we have to play Cowie and Whittingham on the wings shows how little depth we have, and that's down to Malky not bringing in enough recruits. Noone should be our starting winger now alongside Odemwingie/Bellamy (who just isn't good enough, no matter how you see him as a Cardiff hero he's just not a great player anymore) and once again the loan system needs to be used, or at least some money being spent here.

I still think we need a left back, centre back, midfielder, 2 wingers and a striker. We lack so much depth and quality it's unbelievable.

QPR got Remy last year, it didn't do them any good but players are out there, very over priced though in January, will Tan give Malky money to spend ????

Forever Blue:you say campbell is not good enough in one breath, then admit he is getting no service!! When he has recieved some kind of service, he has proved he can score goals.he will cut it if given enough quality service from midfield or out wide.bit unfair imo on campbell.

cant believe a manager at this level could say this..................no matter who you have up top if you expect the work rate for 90mins that he does, plays a loan striker that isnt very well supported what does he expect the outcome to be.........this is blame shifting
