Medel

Sun Dec 08, 2013 11:44 am

Just watched the second goal from yesterday and he is at fault again by not following the players run. He does tend to ball watch far too much and allow players to run. It has happened a few times this year and cost goals.

Did same with Evra goal. I do like medel but I think we need to get him up the pitch more and not playing as a 3rd CB at times!

He has been a revelation but is better when he is hassling the opposition up the field. Chasing balls down. He does it now and again but if he is predominantly a holding player surely his awareness of opposition runs and how to cover them should be better. Plus why would Malky keep him holding when two down?

I would check his visa and work permit as it may have restrictions on coming over the half way line and passing forward.

Ok the last comment is tongue in cheek but it does seem he has time to bring it foward and bring the opposition to him to free up one of our players but he just knocks it sideways.

he's 26 and has played every chile international this year and travelled round trips of maybe 8,000 miles, then back into training so forth so forth.

great player but being a chile international will take its toll as he starts to exit his prime

His prime is now/next year, he is just coming into his prime not exiting it....

Very good player but just seems lazy at times, too negative as well.

Maybe the intense constant international matches have something to do with it, but for so much money I think he should be a bit more positive going forward

Maybe from an age perspective but not from a performance perspective. He is playing in front of the back four but not marking in my opinion.

This is not an attack on him but I think his experience should recognise these runs.

Yes the tactics are wrong and we need to attack more but we need to stop conceding avoidable goals.

Just my opinion

Have you stopped to think it's the tactics? He's not only under performing lately frenchy doesn't attack down wings lately, witts out wide odemwingie played midfield when came on, list is endless? Suggest people look at games from all levels? we are only team who do not attack with any degree of purpose, we make a snail look like speedy gonzales!!!

I am looking from all levels.

One of our best attacking performances and using width was United home yet he still missed the run of Evra for the goal. The thread is about his lack of awareness to cover opposition runs. Plus in one of my previous posts I stated there were the issues with tactics but all that said, he had opportunities yesterday to bring the ball forward as opposed to pas sideways

I thought Medel was poor yesterday but he gets very little help. He tries to do too much at times because of others around him letting him down. Only Kim and Mutch played well in our midfield yesterday. Cowie and Whittingham again, were absolutely awful. Medel getting caught in possession early on put us on the back foot leading to their first goal.

I've always defended Cowie but he was absolute rubbish yesterday. I lost count of the amount of times he had a poor touch resulting in the ball rolling out for a throw! Whittingham has been poor for a few games now and needs a rest. How Kim, who I thought along with Mutch was our best player got subbed with Whitts staying on the pitch for the whole game was totally baffling to me.

Cowie has been very good this season, so to single him out above others, when everyone seemed to play poorly yesterday, is a bit strange. As for Whitts, he probably didn't get subbed basically because of his ability to take set-pieces as he does.

Who has been singled out ffs it's says whitts and cowie
For me whitts would get dropped
But cowie would start in medels roll with gunnerson and mutch either side Kim in front of them and Campbell and Cornelius up front
With noone and odemwingie on the bench to come on later away from home with odemwingie starting wide instead of cowie at home

I know Cowie has been very good this season, but if you went to the game yesterday you would see what I mean with how poor he was. I agreed with Noone coming on for Cowie at half time, but I honestly thought Whittingham should have been subbed for Cornelius to come on up front with Campbell with us going 4-4-2. Again, Campbell did well with the limited service he got and Odemwingie did very well when he came on I thought. But Campbell and Odemwingie up front doesn't work. They are too similar and one of Campbell or Odemwingie needs to have Cornelius to play off.

The way we are playing at the moment, we may as well go 4-4-2. It's pointless having 5 in the midfield if we are going to bypass the 5 midfielders by knocking it long to Campbell. Campbell does more than enough defensive work when up front on his own anyway, so I think even if we played 4-4-2, it would still be a 4-5-1 of sorts defensively anyway with Cornelius up there to hold the ball up and take the pressure off when necessary.

Next Saturday, I would try a 4-4-2 diamond with Medel holding, Kim, Cowie and Mutch pushing forwards behind a front 2 of Campbell and Cornelius. We are at home to a mid table Premiership team. I have defended Malky setting us up defensively at home to Man Utd, Man City, Spurs, Everton and Arsenal. But this Saturday home to West Brom, it's time to go for it and if it goes pear shaped, so be it.
