Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay bemoans club owners' short-term attitudes as doubts remain over own future
Tuesday 3rd Dec 2013.

The Bluebirds boss describes the current trend of sacking managers who don't deliver immediate success as 'disappointing'

Malky Mackay is frustrated by modern football attitudes

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has criticised "short-term" attitudes within football after seeing seven of his peers lose their jobs in the last week.

Martin Jol, Dave Jones, Guy Whittingham, Sean O'Driscoll, Richie Barker, David Flitcroft and Owen Coyle have all left their respective positions over the space of the last seven days.

And Mackay, whose own position has been under scrutiny since the loss of his former head of recruitment Iain Moody sparked a fallout with owner Vincent Tan, has branded the casualty rate among managers and coaches as "really poor".

Mackay remains one of the bookies' favourites to be the next Premier League manager for the chop, despite having the almost universal backing of supporters.

"I was at an LMA (League Managers' Association) event the other night and (chief executive) Richard Bevan told the assembled group that 27 coaches and managers in the last seven days had lost their jobs," said the Scot.

"That's 27 people going back to their families who don't have work anymore.

"That's really poor, 27 people shown the door. That's disappointing."

' 10 reasons why Malky Mackay must stay at Cardiff City '

Mackay is particularly bemused by the failure to notice the success the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and David Moyes have enjoyed when trusted with long tenures in charge.

"The short-termism has got worse," said Mackay, who has been in charge of Cardiff for two and a half years.

"I remember talking to Sven-Goran Eriksson when he was Leicester manager. We were talking about his career and he had five-year tranches at three different football clubs in Italy and Portugal.

"That very rarely happens nowadays. Certainly in the last five or 10 years it has become less and less.

"If you are looking at somebody in a job in the Premier League for two or three years, they are one of the longest serving managers, which is crazy but it's the way it is.

"If you look at the likes of the top sides, Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton had managers in charge for a long period, 27 years, 17 years and 11 years for the three managers.

"Look at the stability and the strength of those clubs over that period, having good people at the top who have got the vision going forward on how the club should be.

"There is no coincidence that there is stability at those clubs."

While displeased at the current trend, Mackay must turn his attention to on-field issues as Cardiff prepare to face Stoke on Wednesday.

Saturday's 3-0 home defeat to Arsenal dropped the Bluebirds to 17th in the table, keeping them level with Stoke three points above the drop zone.

But Mackay insists Wednesday's game, and Saturday's fixture at Crystal Palace, will not prove critical in the final analysis of their season come May.

"The gap between the bottom right up to 10th is minute and I don't see that changing between now and the end of season," he said.

"I have said before that with two weeks to go last season 10 teams could still have been relegated.

"It's about us picking up points and keeping that belief. It is a long-term view I am taking and the group have got belief they can perform at this level, compete at this level and pick up points.

"The last couple of games we have played top teams in this league, but now we are playing teams who are in and around us.

"We all know that counts for nothing. You saw that with Liverpool going to Hull at the weekend. They are both going to be tough games but we will be competitive and do our best to bring points home."

Mackay also confirmed 18-year-old left-back Declan John, who has made one Premier League appearance this term, has signed a new contract to keep him at the club through to 2018.

He said: "Declan is another one of our youngsters coming through and he has had a little taste of first-team action and a little taste of international action which is great for the football club and for him.

"He should be proud of the progress he has made and there is plenty still to come. He is a young talent we want to make sure we have got here long term because we have a lot of belief in him."

You may be right Annis, but if we changed manager, do you think we would get results and shoot up the league with this squad? I dont, probably the opposite, just look at QPR last season, Harry couldnt turn it around, and how much did they spend?

Malky has been under pressure since the start of the season and it will be the same for as long as he remains manager.Mr Tan stated his expectations at the start of the season(see interview on CC player)

He would have been under pressure to achieve promotion last season(I believe he was given a one year plan at the start)
Every manager in the PL is under extreme pressure - some will have it easier e.g.Martinez, but just remind yourself of the states Holloway and Jol ended up in.

I do though agree that there will be some peaks and obviously leading up to the January window Malky will be aware of the danger.

Staying in the PL is the be all and end all for quite a number of clubs- not least of all CCFC.
Few can believe that the financial side of things gives owners anything other than a huge headache if things look ropey and they lose confidence in their manager. As with so many things these days short -termism will apply but any way you look at it it will be a huge decision.

If Mr Tan should decide to pull the plug on Malky he will have to have a pretty good candidate in place:
a) to show to the world that he is making an upgrade
b) to show to the existing squad that he means business
c) the new man will have to bring in some quality players who will make a difference - it's not easy attracting players to S Wales anyway and he'll have to be a name to do this
d) Mr Tan must know that a muppet appointment will really kill his investment

Well it's not nice, but he wouldn't have the premier league job he does of our last Manager wasn't sacked.

They can avoid the sack, pick the right team, make the right subs sign the right players, and win matches.

It's a tough job, but they earn a fecking fortune so they shouldn't moan too much, there are always 80 managers ready to take their place.

But the question is would any of these 80 be good enough to keep us in the Prem??????? :o

I can imagine the conversation when they get home, "Guess what wifey, I got sacked from my extremely well paid job buts it's ok because they've paid my contract up in full so we got a massive lumper to enjoy before my next six or seven figure salary job"
My heart bleeds.

except thats only true for a small minority of managers, and virtually no coaches.

Not just Tan, lose these games and you will see a sharp change in views on him.

Now is his time to perform.

If Houghton was to go Malky may get the call from Delia "lets be having you" he may fancy the challenge working with owners who are fans and know the game

If we lose the next three games they're welcome to him.

Lets be honest. The football is dire. Last season we accepted it as we were winning, so it was at least effective.

Against West Ham, Norwich, Newcastle we setup so defensive and tried to nick a goal.....this tactic is fine against the big teams but teams around us there is no excuse.

Saying that, as he got us promoted I believe he deserves a chance to keep us up. Lose the next three and Ill probably change that view point.

Yes, because Newcastle is one of the teams around us.

We got a point at Norwich, which I would have taken before the game & lost our first game against West Ham, where we were just poor & probably gave the premiership too much respect.

Saying that, this is a massive week for us.

Fair point about Newcastle but at the time they were in awful form and around us.

Norwich broke the record for number of shots at goal when we played them, we had 2 against them. If it wasnt for the fact their strikers were shite it should have been a cricket score.

What do you think of our setup against teams in our mini league?

All if, buts and maybes though Craig. We got a point there, which I would have taken before the game.

We also beat Fulham away from home - battered them to be honest. I'd expect us to play similar to that against Stoke & Palace.

Recently, we have also looked more flowing & attacking. Even against the big boys.

Premier League managers are paid a kings ransom. Stress and pressure comes with the job.

It is sad news for anyone to be made redundant.

However, when they initially accepted the the role they all knew it was performance and results driven.

No mention whatsoever in the artical of the crazy money the coaches/managers are on nowadays and the bumper contract pay-offs paid for their incompetance and often lack of tactical nouse.

When my office closed last year and all staff were made redundant, I felt fortunate to get a smacked arse as the door closed behind me.
I bet Martin Jol won't go hungry this Xmas.

You can't say that, their strikers are shite, it's the same for everyone that plays them, they need to many shots to win games....
