Mutch and Medel

Mon Dec 02, 2013 11:12 am

I have watched Mutch closely this season and to me he appears to be getting better every game. He battles well for every ball, tackles and passes well and is not afraid to have a shot at goal and will be a superb player before very long.
I have also watched Medel closely and I am not impressed at all. I know Medel is a defensive midfielder but he does not offer us anything at all going forward. To me he concentrates more on having a good passing rate above all else. If you watch most of his passes then they are safe one twos or sweeping the ball across the pitch into space. The minute that he tries a pass that is any more inventive then it fails to reach the target or gets intercepted. His defending is also suspect and he has been cruelly exposed recently. I would be interested in your views on these two players? :ayatollah:

Agree with Mutch.

You say you know Medel is a defensive midfielder yet moan he offers nothing going forward.......you do realise he isnt meant to??

Ball retention and breaking up play is his job. He does it fantastically well. He is bound to make mistakes when he has wave after wave of attacks at him. We would have conceded far more goals without him in the team this season.

The reason I mentioned Medel was a defensive midfielder was to put into context that I already realised this so posters would not try and point out the obvious . :ayatollah:

Bluebird64 I agree with you regarding Medal I've been saying this all season to my mates and they just think I'm talking shite, I just think for 11 million we should be getting more for our money, just my opinion.

Yes but also concede its a lot if money for a club like us to spend on a DM especially when we didnt get our more attacking targets.

He will be better with better players around him and centre halfs who can find him.

Medel is the best player we've ever had at the club. :ayatollah:

ramsey?

or do you mean in terms of performances for our club?

Medel is pure quality. He makes the odd mistake like every player does but he finds a pass in tight situations where most of our other players would cough up possession :ayatollah:

Re: Mutch and Medel

I think Mutch is different class and will only get better but for him to excel he needs someone like Medel to protect the back four so Mutch can go and express himself. Both quality IMO

Re: Mutch and Medel

Medel's movement off the ball and way he reads the game have saved us a few times this year, and 9 times out of 10 his tracking back is good too, like others have said he makes the odd mistake but who doesn't?? In terms of is he worth £11 million, imo yes he is, we would be a lot worse off if he hadn't have been with us the way he has played.

Mutch in my books is a class act at the moment and is getting better every time I see him play! His touch and control and his desire to run at people is/will cause a lot of defenders problems, especially against teams in our 'mini league'.

I never rated Mutch at first but fair play he battles for the ball and is always looking to go forward. Once he has a season under his belt then I think he has the potential to become a first rate player and the best part is that he is still young. :ayatollah:

A few of my mates have also stated that Medel is not worth the money but I would not expect everyone to agree. In all fairness to him he is a relatively safe player so that does add some stability to the midfield but we need players to get us going forward so perhaps if Medel had someone more creative around him who could do this then his lack of getting us going forward would not be so much of an issue. :ayatollah:

Medal's a great player. He hasn't been capped 50+ times for Chile for no reason. As stated in this thread, he'll be better with better players around him.

Re: Mutch and Medel

We missed out on Wanyama, we missed out on Capoue, we got Medel out of nowhere, who knows who was next on the list if anyone had we not got Gary.
I agree he's made one or two mistakes, but generally he's been excellent whatever the price?
Mutch given a run of games is starting to look quality, but hopefully more to come.
To turn the original question on it's head, imagine no Medel with Gunner or Whitts playing that holding role that they both played at times last season??

Re: Mutch and Medel

Mon Dec 02, 2013 5:26 pm

I'm not saying Medal is not a good player but I feel its a lot of money spent on a DM player, also that's a good shout if we had more width/pace up front Medal would shine even more, so come on Malky no more Hoofball either play the likes of Noone or look for January Signings to play that way . :ayatollah:

Re: Mutch and Medel

Medel is top quality and that is the end of it.

Re: Mutch and Medel

Mon Dec 02, 2013 6:05 pm

Mutch plays very British, high energy, box to box. Very effective.

Medel is more technical, looks for ball retention. Not afraid if getting the ball in any situation.

Both vital. Medel has times when he doesn't seem good enough for what we paid. But it's been 4 months in completely different culture, different langauage and different style of football league.

Give him a season and he will get better and better.

Re: Mutch and Medel

Wait until he is suspended then we'll see how much we need him.

Consistency - Well I would have to give it to Cowie, every game 7/10 he plays.

Adaptation to the league - Mutch won't be playing in the Championship again. Whitts is showing his class but even if we are relegated he will stay (# true CCFC legend)
