would you be happy with our position,or would you expect to be in maybe the top half of table, just a thought ,
Mon Dec 02, 2013 6:32 am
No.
Hindsight is such a great thing.
I would have bought more but cheaper players with premiership experience aka Hull, they would not have the quality on Medel/Caulker but could offer more.
As someone posted earlier 8 of yesterday's team were in our championship winning team..are thy good enough for the step up??
The jury is out till Xmas.
If we do not get something reasonable from our next 3 games and end up in the bottom 3 at Xmas I really do fear for our future in the premiership...

No, not top half.
United
City
Chelsea
Arsenal
Spurs
Liverpool
Everton
The top 7 is pretty much in a league of their own so to expect to be in top 3 of a mini league of 13 just because we have spent 35m on top of a championship squad is being too expectant when you consider the likes of Newcastle, Southampton, West Ham, Swansea.etc have also spent a lot of money on their squads.
I do however expect us to be creating far more than we have and dont expect us to be hoofing it aimlessly back to the opposition and sitting deep in our own half.
Thats said, we have played 6 top teams in our 7 home games (Swansea were the only team at our level) so lets see how we go this next month.

No.
£35 million to add to a championship squad is not enough

spot on - December will show us exactly where we are in relation to the teams around us.

It is a lot. But most of them have a sell on value. Probably at a profit.
So potentially good business.

No, I wouldn't expect to be top half. If I was bottom half last year and I spent 35 million then I'd expect to be around mid table, if we spent another 35 million again then I'd want to be top half. So we're 70 million short in my eyes.

To be fair he has got it spot on signing Medel and caulker and KTC. But IMO he has wasted money on cornelius and Brayford. That is 10 mil that could of been spent on 2 established prem players

I dont think spending 100m is a prerequisite to finish top half. Swansea, West Brom and West Ham had top 10 finishes last year without spending anywhere near that.

About sums it up for me.
The only easy team we have played this season is Fulham and we won that one. The other so called easier teams we have encountered have been away. Amazing to think the easiest team we have played at home is Swansea.
After this month we should cone back to this question.

Yes, coming up from the Championship you need to spend that kind of money just to be on a level playing field with the rest of the top flight...

No, not this season as we are newcomers, next season if we stay up, we would expect higher.

I would agree in fairness. I was generalising and trying to add a bit of perspective. Both west Ham and West Brom went down then back up so had prem class players already in the system, swansea were the exception to the rule.

What I am saying though is that it takes three windows at least in my eyes (at best), for a newly established team to get together a squad that deserves to be mid table. Before then you have to scrap for every point you get which is why (and this refers back to a post you stuck up in another thread in which we were talking) I think Malky is playing this year the way he is. I think he's accepted that it was going to be a war of attrition from the start and the only goal is to be out of the bottom three, hence his decision to go (largely) with one up front and grind things out over the season.
I don't think that this is his ethos in football and if we survive I believe he will add more strength and begin to play a more expansive style. I have faith in him, I think he's a class act in every way from the way he speaks and acts through to his managerial brain.
Definately the best manager I have seen at city in my time.
