Exclusive: Hull owner threatens to sell club if fans refuse to accept Tigers name

"I'm a simple man. Do they want me to stay? If it's 'No thank you', fine, in 24 hours the club is for sale... I do not put in one more pound."

Dr Assem Allam says he will not put one more pound into the club if he feels the majority of supporters did not agree with his policies
RICHARD RAE Sunday 01st December 2013.

Hull City's owner has described supporters protesting against his plan to change the name to Hull Tigers as "hooligans" and warned he will put the club up for sale if the fans do not accept his authority.

In an exclusive interview with The Independent on Sunday, Dr Assem Allam said he would not put one more pound into the club if he felt the majority of supporters did not agree with his policies.

Dr Allam added that displaying banners reading "City Till I Die" and "We Are Hull City" distracts the players, prevents other fans watching the game and infringes on the rights of advertisers. The banners are accompanied by chants of "City Till We Die", but Dr Allam said of the perpetrators: "They can die as soon as they want, as long as they leave the club for the majority who just want to watch good football."

Campaign groups opposing the change have peaceably unfurled and displayed banners after 19 minutes at every home game this season, and intend to do so again at today's televised match against Liverpool. But at the previous home match, against Crystal Palace, stewards attempted to prevent a banner being displayed before relenting when the situation threatened to become heated.

Dr Allam said: "How can you be supporting a club when you distract attention during a game?" He suggested supporters buy advertising space at the stadium instead. But he also made it clear he does not intend to change his controversial plan, which he describes as "shortening" rather than changing the club name to produce what he insists is a more effective brand to market abroad, particularly in Asia and Africa, and that he retains the support of the "silent majority". If it is shown he does not, he said, he will walk away.

"I'm a simple man. Do they want me to stay? If it's 'No thank you', fine, in 24 hours the club is for sale... I do not put in one more pound."

A spokesman for campaign group City Till I Die said: "The intemperate suggestion that singing 'City Till I Die' or holding a banner with Hull City's name on it constitutes disorder is ill-informed, unhelpful and will be considered by many to be offensive; nor is it credible to believe such measured actions will effect the team we so admire."

Meanwhile, Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge misses today's game at Hull and could face a lengthy lay-off with possible ankle ligament damage. Club doctors are currently assessing the severity of the injury.

These big knobs soon throw their teddies out of their prams.

What these guys don't understand is that most of us fans can't be bought. So they will not put their money into the club so be it. Club fans like Hull have been to the lower places and survived and if it comes to that they will do it again.

I'm sure that's not true.

So if he cares what fans think, why didnt he consult with fans about rebrand? Thats right, because he doesnt care what we think.

Because he could live with 5% being unhappy, But it's more like 90%. He must feel something when these songs are directed at him, Just like the Hull chairman.

Too many owners, particularly the foreigners, treating clubs like playthings. Its like when we were young there was always one kid that said "it's my ball so you play my rules or I'll take the ball home". Well take your ball home Mr Allam, there will always be somebody who can find another ball.

There was a time when I thought that city fans could not be bought but I now beg to differ due to reading some of the posters we have on here. Good luck to Hull and I hope they stand up to the owner but we will have to wait and see. The strange thing is that when our owner threatened not to invest the full amount in us that he had planned due to us initially rejecting the rebrand, some of our fan base gave in straight away even though Tan had also promised that he would bring in extra investors and leave our club in good shape. The fact that we had this promise from Tan meant that he was not going to throw us to the dogs yet amazingly some of our fans were going around spreading doomsday scenarios of going bust and playing in the lower leagues. It would appear that the Hull fans do not have the same assurances that we had so therefore taking on the owner for them is a far greater risk compared to the situation that we faced. :ayatollah:

Before tan there was strong possibility of doomsday scenario! And it's well documented, only ostriches would say otherwise. Now it's a completely different scenario tan is in far too deep probably to just get up go.

Allan you are wrong. There was never any doomsday scenario because when we first rejected the rebrand, Tan stated that he would not be prepared to invested as much as he had intended and that he would be looking to bring in other investors. He further went on to say that he still had a deep affection for our club and that he would leave us in good shape. So unless you are calling Tan a bare faced liar and think that he would not have left us in good shape then it is difficult to see how this situation could be interpreted as us ending up in administration. :ayatollah:

Was great singing we'll always be blue yesterday, more and more now seeing tan for what he is, even lots in 111 yesterday singing it! One bloke in front of me was shaking his head in disgust, when I asked him why, his reply was typical, "because we are red now and not blue" I delved a bit further and asked how long he had been supporting the city, the reply: "5 years"!!! he was about 60 years of age. I honestly don't understand. :ayatollah:

I wish Tan felt like that to be honest. He said it in an interview once but it wasn't really said as a threat.
