Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey says he did the ayatollah out of respect for the reception the Cardiff City fans gave him when he opened the scoring against his former club.
The 22-year-old scored Arsenal's first and third goals as they saw off his former club at the Cardiff City Stadium.
As he opened the scoring on the half hour, he refused the celebrate and, when he was applauded by the home fans, did the ayatollah.
The former Wales captain said: “The ball came in and I put my head on it and luckily it went in.
“I was really pleased with the way the fans reacted and I've got a lot of respect for them.
“They realised that I needed to make the next step in my career and I wanted to give them my respect by not celebrating.
“It was a fantastic atmosphere and the support they gave their team was excellent and with the players they have, I'm sure they'll be alight this season.”
The man, who is currently one of the most sought after stars in Europe says he hopes he showed his former club the player they produced in the decade he was there.
He said: “Hopefully I put on a performance for the people who watched me when I started my career and I hope they have seen the player they produced today.
“It was a very professional performance for us, Cardiff is a very difficult place to come.
“They way the manager has got them playing has been fantastic this season – especially at home where they've picked up some excellent points against some of the top teams in this league.”
