Don Cowie reveals he feared Cardiff City axe before stunning Premier League resurgence
Thursday 28th Nov 2013.
Cowie doubted he would even make the club's 25-man Premier League squad before establishing himself as a first-team regular at the Bluebirds this season
Don Cowie is relishing every single moment of his Premier League adventure with Cardiff City after admitting he presumed that it would be over before it had even started.
Cowie sat out City’s opening fixture at West Ham and thought he would be a bit-part figure this season, but the Scottish international has forced his way into Malky Mackay’s thinking and has played in nine of Cardiff’s last 11 matches.
“There was doubt in my head as to whether I would even make the 25-man squad because I knew the manager was going to recruit in the summer,” said Cowie.
“Everybody is wary of their position and the key was to work as hard as possible to prepare for the season.
“When I go away in the summer I don’t drink, make sure I’m in good shape and ready to fight for my place.
“I’m extremely lucky the manager sees me as an important part of the squad.
“I know the strengths I bring to the team. My assets are that I’m athletic and can get about the pitch really well.
“If I can supplement that with goals and assists, then I am delighted.
“I’m an honest person and know when I’m playing well or not.
“My job is to keep doing what I am, keep my head down and get on with it. I’m happy for others to get the headlines.”

Cowie, 30, had two full seasons in the Championship with Mackay’s Bluebirds, having made the move from Watford during 2011.
He has scored nine goals in 88 first team appearances and told Cardiff City Player: “We are in the Premier League and we have to make the most of it. We want to be here for many years to come.
“When we go out for a pre-match warm-up you have a wee glance over and see who is in the opposition team and it can be quite daunting.
“That’s the challenge and as the season goes on we are getting more and more used to stepping up to those tests.
“We showed against Manchester City and Manchester United that on our day we can be a match for anybody and we’ll have confidence going into Saturday’s home game with Arsenal.”
Cowie played under manager Mackay at Watford and followed him from Hertfordshire to South Wales.
“I owe an awful lot to the manager,” says Cowie. “Having played for him during two seasons at Watford it looked as if I would be leaving the club.
“While I was weighing up my options he was appointed manager at Cardiff and once he asked if I wanted to play for him again I didn’t hesitate.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time playing under him, but if you ask any player they will say they’ve got a great rapport with him.
“There are ups and downs if you are not always in the team, but he always makes sure everybody is a part of it.”
Cowie has earned 10 full international caps for Scotland, the last 18 months ago, and is keen to play for his country again.
“My priority has always been to do my best for Cardiff City.
“If that leads to a call-up for Scotland that would be great.”

I thought he linked up very well with Theo against Utd - one of his best games in a city shirt.

Maybe people will finally drop this silly "Malky's love child" tag that Cowie seems unfortunate enough to be tarnished with. In Malky we trust is a phrase that I see and hear very often and I personally never doubted Malky saw something in Don that many fans weren't seeing. Malky sees this guy in training every single day so who better than to pass judgement on him than Malky himself.
Believe in Malky 'cos the man has not let us down yet.

Agree completely with that

Been one of my favourite players this season! Grossly underrated because he is not a match winner.
In some teams you need that player to do all the running and the dirty work- Cowie is that player.
He is playing perfectly in this league because he is not giving anyone a minutes peace!!!

Cowie is an excellent player. But Paul Abbandonato obviously hates him because he's a 'workhorse' and because he isn't Kim Bo-Kyung.

And me......The guy is an absolute workhorse and never stops working hard for the team. I'd like to know what batteries he is running on.

Cowie has always been a recent player, you know what your getting and in certain games he just fits into a game plan with no problem at all. He doesnt stand out and doesnt do what a lot of fans love but he fits into a system when needed.

Let's be blunt here he would struggle to get into half the sides in the championship let alone this division. Malky rates him highly and it annoys me. He is your typical steady Eddie player who doesn't really f**k up a lot but at the same time gives you very little besides running around a lot.
Winds me up the likes of Nooney are not getting in yet he features.
In a league with the big boys now and Malkys summer talk of being ruthless should have applied to Cowie!

Doesn't do nothing wrong in the games but doesn't have a major impact.

It's time to wake up and smell the coffee.
Don Cowie is one of our best performers.
Please note I did not say players.
He gives 100 percent every game.
Again note I did not say 110 percent.
He makes the midfield tick.
If he did not, Malky would pick somebody else.
Simples.

Matter of opinion but lets ignore games such as villa where he was so anonymous it was embarrassing shall we?
Problem is Malky is always just looking for any excuse to find a place for him. Every manager has a blue eyes.
For the league we are now in we should be having far far betters than Cowie in the 25 let alone the team.
Still don't get why he let Conway go as he is defensively the best wide player we have which fits into Malkys cautious set up, plus he poses a far bigger threat going forward than Cowie.
Think we need better than both of them to be honest but still find that decision a strange one.
