Football sayings that piss you off...

Wed Nov 27, 2013 8:41 pm

Everyone knows that football is full of cliches and tired old phrases.

But the one that really pisses me off at the moment is the constant use of 'at this level'. Talk about done to death!

The other one is something that pundits and commentators are wheeling out quite frequently at present:

"You wonder"
"You think"
"You feel"

Does my box in!

Instant control! ITV commentary does my head in for a number of reasons, but that comment annoys the hell out of me!

My brother hates the saying "he's got a lovely left foot" because he's right footed and he says you never hear anyone say a player has a lovely right foot. He has a point to be fair, although I don't mind that saying as I'm left footed! :laughing6:

Talking of ITV, have you ever noticed how Clive Tyldesley always screams "ROOOONEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYY" whenever the player so much as looks like he'll shoot - reminds me of the early FIFA games where the commentary was one dimensional, and if a star player touched the ball, Motty would yell his name...

Dont know about football, but when people say "Lets debate" on football messageboards. Wtf is that all about? if someone came out with that in a pub, 9 times out of 10 they'd probably end up with a bar stool over their heads. "Im having a DEBATE" ffs

How do he and his sidekick Andy Townsend continue to get all the big matches on ITV - awful both of them.

"Rather be blue in league two"

Especially when said by teenagers who never experienced those god awful times.

Repetition of the word "top", as in, "he's a top, top player".
Unfortunately our Malky is a prime culprit with this one.
Stupid really, but it just winds me up.

'the Barclays Premier League', perpetuated by Brendan Rodgers and formerly Owen Coyle (he was terrible) and now our very own Malky Mackay. Dreadful.

Anything, and I mean anything, that emits from the rancid whisky-addled yellow-toothed mouldy-tongued mouth of that little bitter ginger gobshite of a poison-dwarf that is Leighton James. I shit nicer things. Happy Christmas.

"Beat the keeper, didn't beat the post" err goal keepers don't defend posts so no they didn't beat the keeper. No different to it going wide.

Brendan brought that in and Malky isnt far behind him in the use of this. Grips my shit as well.

"They are asking searching questions of the opposition defence"... what the f**k is that even supposed to mean?!

The worst comment I've heard a commentator or pundit use was when Paul Merson said "this is a classic game of you have a shot, we have a shot"... undoubtedly, the least technical analysis ever.

"Comfortable on the ball" ? Does that mean the ball sits nicely between the cheeks of a players arse or what?

I used to hate "he's looking sharp in training" too!

"Luckily for the keeper the post was in the way" It isn't in the way. Its not in the way of the goal so without the post the ball still wouldn't have gone in

Not if it's a cup game that goes into extra time, that would be a game of 4 halves!

Constant incorrect usage of the word 'literally' really annoys me. Eg "he's literally on fire tonight!". No, he isnt literally on fire, if he was they would stop the game or at the very least sub him... :-|

One that annoyed me was when they said about Michu against us something along the lines of 'if he was in his good form he would have finished that'.

"Middle of the park" it's not a park it's a field or pitch.

"He almost hit that too well" - Can you hit it "too well" and why is that the reason the shot failed.

"If you did that someone on the street you'd be in jail" - Why would anyone do a two footed lunge on anyone on the street?
