For Toronto!!!!!
Not quite a done deal, but radio says a virtual certainty.Huge money deal apparently and many pundits saying the move will end his England career for good. Can't believe no premier club has moved for him,top player and great finisher.
"WHAT A WASTE OF TALENT"!!

What a waste

Ironic that his career has mirrored Earnie's in some way, and he could be joining him soon.
Successful at one club, bit part player at other clubs, does reasonably well but unfancied by one or two managers, despite still having an ability to score goals.
I can think of a good two or three Prem clubs who could do with Defoe's services.

Mirrored Earnies

Defoe has been banging them in at the top level all his career bar a season in the championship with West Ham.
Different level to Earnie.
I echo what has already been said its a waste of talent him moving to the MLS.

Thought he'd go back to West Ham.

I'm suprised he's not selected for AVB premier league games! 8 appearances and scored 9 goals so far, what more can he do?
Going to Toronto just before the world cup selections..what is he thinking?? maybe he prefers the $ than the £

Is a waste but cant blame him for taking 90k a week and cant blame other clubs not wanting to give him 90k a week

He's definitely still good enough to play for the vasy majority of premiership clubs, i'm amazed that nobody have gone in for him.

Wow. MLS standard is probably Championship standard, if not worse. Shocking.

We should of bought him, proven prem striker

Yeah, different level, but their misfortunes as players have been similar.

I agree both always score goals at every level. But both kept seemed to be 2nd choice or bench striker for some reason. Both should easily have been regular starters in the Prem as they both would have scored plenty of goals.

I doubt he's going to the MLS. He's too good for it and should consider a move to a lower positioned team in the BPL for more first team football.

Will a lower positioned team be willing to offer him the reported 90k a week? I think this is what it boils down to.
Hes 31, last big pay day for him.

Exactly and I for one don't blame him.

Tottenham: Aston Villa to hijack Defoe move
by Mark Brus2nd December 2013 11:00pm GMT
Aston Villa will hope to persuade Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe to turn down a move to Toronto and remain in the Premier League.
The out-of-favour Spurs forward looks increasingly likely to leave White Hart Lane this January, with reports emerging that an agreement is already in place for him to move to the MLS with Canadian side Toronto.
However, SportsDirect News understands that Aston Villa could join Defoe's old side West Ham United in attempting to hijack the move and keep the 31-year-old in English football.
Villa struggled against relegation last season and have been somewhat over-reliant on star striker Christian Benteke in recent times, and Paul Lambert would be interested in signing a top quality strike partner for the Belgian.
The money on offer in the MLS may be too good for Defoe to turn down, though a move to Villa Park may tempt him if it keeps him in the mind of England manager Roy Hodgson ahead of next summer's World Cup.
