Campbell for England? Seriously?

Tue Nov 26, 2013 8:28 pm

Will be interesting to see whether Campbell (and Caulker) ever get selected for an England squad. Not meant to be a slur on either player just an observation of the selection policy of the England management. It appears that you can only play for England if you play for one of the "top" clubs. How do players like Tom Cleverly, Chris Smalling, Ashley Young and in the past Stewart Downing and Adam Johnson get in the squad, let alone the team. Interesting that neither Downing or Johnson are now playing even though they are getting far more game time with their current clubs. But then again, their current clubs are Sunderland and West Ham, not "top"clubs, yet they were England regulars when sat on the bench for Liverpool and Man City. Lots of better players playing for smaller clubs but won't get a look in. Bet Campbell and Caulker will never be considered whilst they play for Cardiff under the current England regime

I will bet with you Caulker will get an England cap whilst being a Cardiff player.

If Caulker keeps performing in the current manner, then he'll be in with a shout of being called up soon, surely.

Not so sure about Campbell. But then again, if he goes on a run, you never know.

Always has been the case, you get selected based on who you play for not on form. Until that changes England will never achieve. Caulker has been immense this year, I really don't know what he has to do. Then again, not being selected for England is our gain as he's fresh for our games instead of playing pointless Friendlies.

I think you are right. "Average" top four team players are getting in before getting in before better players in "lesser" teams. But with Roy Hodgson picking three players from southampton, who knows. With the next friendlies in March I hope they are not called up because we will have bigger fish to fry.

Don't personally remember Graham or Sinclair being touted for England, but my point still stands that despite both Dyer and Routledge being on fire last year, Downing and Johnson were consistently first choices despite not being able to get in their respective clubs first teams

Think you have some good points.
Quite sad really.
Campbell did get a call up while at Sunderland so who knows.

Southampton players only picked due to injuries/withdrawals, though

Yes that is true however it's a totally different scenario with caulker because:
a) he's been capped before, so it's not a new experience.
B) malky wouldn't let it get to him, totally different ethos to Dave jones who let players get away with murder
c) he left spurs to join Cardiff for first team football, so if he was a big time Charlie he wouldn't have left would he.

Thought Caulker only played in a friendly, so was not actually capped. Hence the recent talk of him still being eligible for Scotland. Hope you're right about the rest because he's a top bloke

Caulker has one England Cap & goal.

He is eligible for Scotland as the game has was capped in was a friendly & you are only committed to a country once you've played in a competitive fixture for them.

To claim he wasn't capped is incorrect. :thumbright:

As I thought it was.

Do think its a silly rule though, once you play for a country at U21 and above levels that should be it.
