'My favourite footballer of the past 15 years': Malky Mackay's tribute to Ryan Giggs ahead of Cardiff City v Manchester United
Friday 22nd Nov 2013.
Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has paid tribute to Ryan Giggs as his "favourite Premier League footballer over the last 15 years" as the Manchester United legend prepares to face his hometown club for the first time this weekend.
Mackay paid tribute to Giggs, saying: “Every day of every week over the last 15 years Ryan has been a top bloke.
“He is probably my favourite player of last 15 years in English football. I met him a couple of weeks ago and he is now stepping into the other side of football with his player-coach role at Manchester United.
“That's something I did at Watford before coming into management.
“Look at the way he has conducted himself professionally over his whole career.
"He is an absolute model professional in the way he has kept his body and the way he has adapted to allow himself to play on.
“Ryan is an absolute star, an iconic figure in Wales.
"No doubt at some stage he will end up in management and at Old Trafford he is learning from the best.”
Mackay confirmed Andreas Cornelius is in Cardiff's squad for Sunday's match, while Aron Gunnarsson, who went off midway through the second half of Iceland's World Cup play-off against Croatia in midweek, is fit.
Gunnarsson rejoined the Cardiff squad on Thursday and is training with the main group.
Peter Odemwingie has also recovered from a minor muscle strain and is in Cardiff's squad to face United.
“This is another match the city of Cardiff, club supporters, players and staff can look forward to.
“We will be playing a Manchester United team who have a good, experienced manager who has settled into the job and his team have clicked.
“That team is packed full of quality. We have to deal with that and adapt.
“Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are strikers up there with the best. There is an argument they are the best, certainly they are up there with Liverpool's Suarez and Sturridge.”
Captain Steven Caulker and Ben Turner will again join forces in the back four and Mackay said: “My two centre-backs are two of my best players in terms of consistency.
“They are doing extremely well and we also have my club captain Mark Hudson who can step into that role.”
