Chris Coleman plans to lead Wales to Euro 2016 dismissing critics and Craig Bellamy rumours
Saturday 16th Nov 2013
The planning for that tournament begins this evening, when Coleman’s Wales look to overcome Finland in a friendly international at Cardiff City Stadium.
Chris Coleman has signed a new deal with the FAW
Coleman " I am the right man to lead Wales to Euro 2016 "
Wales v Finland - 6pm - Cardiff City Stadium -
Chris Coleman last night declared he was the right man to continue leading Wales and insisted he wasn’t going to hand over the manager’s job to Craig Bellamy or any other “populist fans’ choice.”
Coleman, heavily linked with the Crystal Palace post, put pen to paper on a new two-year deal which will see him lead Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and the rest of the Welsh team through the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.
The planning for that tournament begins this evening, when Coleman’s Wales look to overcome Finland in a friendly international at Cardiff City Stadium.
Coleman and the FA of Wales hierarchy, who ended months of uncertainty surrounding their manager by striking the new deal, each accept many Welsh fans will be left underwhelmed by the decision.
While Coleman has hesitated over the contract extension, Craig Bellamy has been heavily linked with the Welsh post with many fans clamouring for change.
But Coleman insists he does not take any notice of the criticism flying his way, even stating the faceless cyber warriors slating him on messageboards “do not have an ounce of football knowledge.”
“If I was easily insulted, then this is not the job or industry to be involved in. Whatever they say about me, I’m not worried,” said Coleman.
“These days there are websites, Facebook and Twitter and I will guarantee you that most people who have their say don’t even come and watch us play.
“They basically don’t know what they are talking about. They haven’t got an ounce of footballing intelligence, but they can make a negative comment and everyone pounces upon it.
“I can’t afford to get caught up in that, though. I just want the fans to be behind the team. We have to be strong and move forward together.”
Coleman admitted he did consider walking away when the going got tough earlier this autumn as Wales crashed to Macedonia and Serbia.
But he said: “There was definitely an element of me thinking if I passed this onto someone else with less expereince it might be a bit daft.
“That new person may have appealed to the fans in the short term, but I had spent two years learning in this job and I didn’t want to give up the only job I really want to do.”
Asked about the Bellamy links, Coleman said: “Just because you’ve been a good player, it doesn’t mean you’re going to be a good coach or manager. I can promise you that.
“If Craig decides to do that, then the proof will be in the pudding. I’ve been a manager for 10 years, having had eight years of experience before I took this job, and it’s far more pressurised than anything I was used to.
“Taking on the Wales job as your first in management is an enormous ask. It can be the best job in the world... or your last. You would have to sink or swim.
“It’s an eye-opener. I just decided, after considering everything, that my two years at the helm made me better for the experience, which holds us in better stead ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifiers.
“I don’t want to hand that on to someone else. I want to finish the job I have started with these players.
“I haven’t changed my mind on anything concerning comments I raised previously about short-term FAW thinking. But I also decided I needed to practice what I was saying myself.
“Just because I had a tough little period in September, when we lost two games and were without key players, it was no reason to pack it in.”
Coleman continued: “There was no temptation to go to Palace. Everybody thinks if you are a coach you want to work in the Premier League. Financially and with the media coverage it is seen as the best league in the world.
“But I have had five years in the Premier League with Fulham already and don’t have any aspirations to work there again. When my time is up with Wales, whenever that is, I would prefer to work abroad.
“In hindsight, I could have put an end to the speculation by signing the contract a little earlier. I didn’t because there was so much criticism coming may way after we lost two games in September.
“It gave me a chance to sit back and look at it from a managerial point of view and ask myself questions. Was I the right man to get the best out of the players. were the expectations from others realistic, can I manage that? Am I good enough to effect winning games if we don’t have our strongest squad?
“Well, we have a fantastic group of players and I will be ready for us to have a right old crack at it next time.

A lot of players have come out and said they enjoy playing under him, hopefully we have no injuries so we can get a few wins under our belt before qualifying starts.
With the extra spaces in Euro 2016 I think we have a very good chance. With players like Bale, Rambo, Allen, Kanu, Vokes, Williams, Collins, Taylor and Ledley we can definitely do something

The players enjoying playing for him mean nothing. I know Chris, and yes he's a lovely genuine bloke. But it's an opportunity missed as far as I'm concerned. On paper we have one of the top 16 squads in europe, never mind the 24 places that will be on offer next time. And still I don't think we will make it with Coleman at the helm.

On paper we have a very average squad with the exception of Bale and an in-form Ramsey.

Dont be so ridiculous
You are getting clouded by two players.
Today we practically had a fully fit squad and had starters such as Andy King, Simon Church, Chris Gunter, Sam Ricketts, Robson Kanu and Hennessey, thats the majority of the side..... That would barely be mid table Championship standard.
Off the bench we had appearances from Jazz Richards, David Cotterill, Owain Tudor Jones, Ben Davies and Sam Vokes... Again lower championship standard at best Davies aside. Thats without calling upon some of the other subs who have rarely even played for their clubs yet.
Our squad is staggeringly bad, its just too thin.

At the end of the day we have an average squad with a poor manager. Because of this we need a manager with the guts to try something new that will make us different from other teams. Coleman will use the same old tactics that will get us no where I'm afraid.

Funny how now that Bellamy has retired from international football he has a pop at him after begging him to stay on board and Bellamy getting him a result in Belgium.
Tosser.

Ermm I don't think you quite understood what I said. We do indeed have on paper one of the top 16 sides in Europe. I'm sure you've read it as we have one of the top sides in europe which I didn't state at all! I totally agree it is a very average squad, but when there are 24 places up for grabs in the final of the next Euros, we should, on paper with the squad we have be able too qualify. I'm not clouded by 2 players at all. We are talking here about 24 teams qualifying for the Euros. Not the world cup! Can you seriously name more than 16 sides (on paper) that have a better squad than us? I doubt it. So as I said, it's a missed opportunity as we will not qualify although we really should! Coleman nice guy. but sorry he ain't up to it.

But you arent taking into consideration the process of qualifying. It isn't a mass group and the best 16 go through.
We are in a group and will be seeded 4th in all likelihood..... meaning in our group we will be the 4th best and the top 2 go through.
Sir Alex in his pomp would struggle, let alone anyone we can bring in on our budget. Coleman is doing just fine with what he has at his disposal... Which isnt much.

We have two x factor players in Bale and Ramsey
Genuine prem quality in Allen, Williams and Collins
Top championship Ledley, Davies (maybe better than this in time), Taylor, King, Vaughan
Jonny Williams looks one for the future....
We got poor right backs and goalkeepers, no strikers or wingers (apart from Bale)
A good manager needs to build a system that fits our strengths and hides our weakness, can Coleman do this? I don't think so

Name another manager who would come for 5k a week with top level experience and a style to suit the midfield strength we have.
He is the best man for the job by a country mile.

I have a new song for wales.
Chris Colemans,
'I'll only play you on a reputation basis and overlook all other players and current form Armyyy!!

Interviews like that will get the crowds back.
He wont be the worse manager we ever had but im pretty sure he is the most stupid, even worse he thinks he is clever.

Fair play it must be one of the most frustrating jobs in the world being a football manager. People who barely know you labelling you certain thing calling you a clown/idiot etc. Without really knowing the behind scenes going on.
You gotta feel for the guy but football is constantly evolving and people get stuck in their ways this is the problem with old managers

Hes probably one of the youngest international managers around at 43 years old.
Why people arent behind him i dont know. Everyobody recognises there is nobody better so what is the point in moaning?

Coleman He's young but his age is a number,it comes down to where he took on board most of his managerial knowledge possibly fulham, blackburn, but Swansea where he truely learnt his early trade.
Im not sure how he is applying and adjusting to todays game is enough for this squad.
I would say Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger are two of the freshest men in the business this is because they are able to adapt the game plan and create new dynamics better than anyone else in the country

I'm no Coleman fan but take Bale, Ramsey and Williams [who is inconsistent and was at fault for the goal yesterday] out of that squad and you are not left with very much. I think we will struggle and will probably miss out again even with the extra 8 teams qualifying.
He has to try and find a system that suits the payers and that was where Gary Speed was starting to get it right, but in fairness no manager in the world can take the sort of defensive errors we are prone to in every game we play into account.

Sorry I disagree there ranger. I'm sure when this past group was drawn you looked at it and said too yourself " We've got a chance here!" And that was a World cup qualifying group where the groups are more condensed. So in essence, when the Euro groups are drawn, the best 24 should qualify regarding of seedings as you do not have Asia/ Austral Asia/ Middle East/ some islands in the south pacific and the north and South poles which have to be represented! (Ok I exaggerated a bit but you get my drift!

). But yet I dont think we will qualify as Coleman has not got it in him too drill this squad into a well oiled unit, and that is what is needed. The players are there, but sadly the wrong choice in manager has been made.
