' FOOTBALL FANS ' Do you think there is any difference ?

Wed Nov 13, 2013 5:34 pm

' FOOTBALL FANS ' Do you think there is any difference in loyalty/passion etc with many of the fans from the Premier League to fans from the lower divisions ?
I was debating this today with someone and I believe there is, not of course with all the fans, but with many of them from the Premier League.

Opinions

' From Facebook '

John Jj Jenkins Definitely. 'Supporters' have come out of the woodwork for both our clubs since promotion to the uh hum 'English' premier league.

It's far easier to support a successful team than one that is struggling in the lower divisions so probably yes I do think fans of lower division clubs are more passionate than most EPL club supporters.

Wez, if thats so, then why if your promoted your support goes up, sometimes trebles and if relegated they vanish in to thin air in there thousands ? So that means a lot of them only go for glory and success in my opinion.

So in my opinion there is a different type of fan.

I agree annis the most loyal and passionate fans will support their teams through the bad times as well as just the good times and not just fade away when the going gets a bit tough

Always have great, great respect for fans who follow their club through thick and thin, no matter what.

Even back in the 60,s/70,s in school you always got the fans who supported the "WINNING" team.

I totally respect any fan who supports through thick and thin - especially those from the lower leagues with smaller fan base who go week in week out. with no major success but with "hope in the heart"

Like us not so long ago I suppose !!!!

Annis,
Call me old fashioned, but I really do think that if you've seen real bad times with your club, the good times are enjoyed with more passion. Look at how we celebrated promotions from the lower leagues. I dont know what it is,but I certainly dont feel the same now we've reached the Premier League as I did when I dreamed of reaching it.
I look at all the 'plastic' Welsh Liverpool, Man U, and Chelsea fans in work who certainly dont have the same feelings as I do when we win, lose or draw. Their soul doesnt seem into it.
I'm not qualified to comment on the proper 'top 6' fans and how they feel....pity you cant get some on here to comment....would probably be interesting.....and to how they feel about having loads of 'plastics' hanging on.
I have nothing but respect for the lower league fans as we've seen enough first hand..........the joy at gaining a promotion or even creating a star player and selling him on.....you cant beat it.
For me, a bit of the magic has gone.........I still love it though. :old:

How can the fans of Man Utd, Liverpool etc say that the highs of following their club are as good as the highs of us following Cardiff? They can't mainly because they've never really experienced the lows (and I mean lows!!!) like we have.

The better debate would be, to ask the question, What percentage of a clubs supporters can be considered as loyal?
For instance, in recent times Portsmouth, Wolves, Leeds, Sheffield Weds and United, Brum etc etc have all dropped down the leagues from the highest level and most retain upwards of 70-80% of their support! but who out of all the clubs that have fallen from their lofty perches! have had the hardest test of loyalty? Who has fallen the fastest and hardest, yet retained the largest percentage of supporters? That's a good debate

To me they are the real fans and the backbone of a football club

Your post is virtually exactly how I feel

I think loyalty there is, but passion no.

A lot are very.passionate, but aren't interested about going back to the carp times.

But it's the sky affect.

Before sky took over, arsenal and Chelsea never had 25000 in the ground, all of a sudden arsenal now have 60,000 each week and Stamford bridge is full.

Those clubs fans really have been tested as they are all big clubs, I would say they have kept good support during the bad times, Coventry and Bristol City fans are now being tested, Coventry more than nearly any club I know and of course Rangers and Pompey fans who have both been Superb.

Portsmouth are often offered up as super loyal fans and while I mostly agree, they have their fair share of plastics. I was looking at their attendances and they've lost about 7,000 since their Prem days. So yes their support is very good but it shows every club has its plastics. I would say Man City's support held up the best when dropping down the league.

I think there is a huge difference. Back in the 70s/80s I didn't attend every home game but I was there most games and you got to know the regular people. These days, if you havn't got a season ticket you'd be knackered as it's a lottery to get a ticket and whilst I know some of the people around where I 'sit' (including Carl) there are a lot of people I don't know and I think this was to be expected as part of a 'successful' club. :ayatollah:

We are in the entertainment business, like it or not.

You show "B" movies, you get small crowds.

You show "Blockbusters" you get bigger crowds.

Simples!

Yes i agree there is 2 types of fans, one that only intersted in success, and the 2nd who are there whatever league we are in

Been season ticket holder since 1994 (4 years old) bar one season a couple of years ago, and as much as i love seeing cardiff in the prem, i loved standing on the bob bank in the shit days aswell, getting soacked and seeing ur team lose nearly every week, to me that makes you more passinatote

To the Loyal/Passionate fans we dont think like that, as Our club becomes part of our lives, its not just a movie.

A big question I have which I think may be relevant to a lot of exiles is what the perception of me as a fan is...

I have never had a season ticket but was at every home game (and the odd away when I got older)from 89 to 04 when I left Cardiff.

For the last few years I have been to all the London away fixtures, mostly sat quietly in the home end as its easier to get a ticket. This year I missed fulham as I was away, went to Brentford friendly, and the only possible other game I can get a ticket for will be palace.

But I check the news, forums and official site daily to make sure I know what is going on, watch every match either on sky or an internet stream and anyone who knows me knows CCFC is a huge part of who I am.

I was there in the dundgeon days but cant be there in the glory days. Yet many would label me an armchair fan or worse a plastic.

Just keen to actually know what you lot would call me as to me I am 100% through and through Bluebird just from afar these days...

life changes.we can not all be there all of the time.i have always felt privileged to support Cardiff.i always believed what we have is special and unique,i have been a ST holder many years but like you, there have been periods where going regular wasnt possible, id say you are a real fan.dont think you needed to ask really it isnt all about how many games you attend, it about where your heart lies and what life allows you to do.
