Cardiff City star Gary Medel will face Manchester United rival Wayne Rooney when he plays for Chile against England on Friday week, just days before the Bluebirds host Manchester United


Gary Medel is out to put the Wembley shackles on Wayne Rooney - and Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay plans to be there on a spying mission ahead of Manchester United’s visit to Cardiff later this month.

Brazil-bound Chile have already qualified for next summer’s finals and Medel will be part of La Roja (The Reds) who head to Wembley on Friday week as part of their World Cup preparations.

“I’ll be there for that one, it’s a fixture well worth taking in,” said Mackay, who could be keeping close tabs on United stars Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley as well as Rooney - the visit of the champions on November 24 City’s first fixture after the two-week international break.

“Cardiff are fortunate to have top international footballers in our squad and that’s great for the club.”

Former Sevilla and Boca Juniors star Medel operates in a deep-lying midfield role for Cardiff and has proved a huge hit since his £11m summer switch from La Liga in Spain.

But despite being only 5ft 7ins he slots in at the heart of Chile’s defence - although he did score the winner in last month’s 2-1 victory over Ecuador in Santiago.




A draw would have been enough for Chile to qualify for their second successive World Cup finals, but Medel guaranteed himself national-hero status with the goal that booked their spot in Brazil.

And Medel is just as popular in South Wales after another starring role against Swansea when he protected the Bluebirds’ back four and cut off the supply line to Spanish striker Michu.


“Gary has been outstanding in terms of the way he has adapted to a different culture and settled into Premier League football seamlessly,” said Mackay.

“He is having English lessons four times a week and is making good progress, he has been working hard on that.

“Those English lessons take time, but he is enjoying living in this city.

“He has settled in his house and knows where the better restaurants and shops are.

"All of that helps a player settle in.”

Hopefully they dont make medel fly out to meet the squad in chile ''which they probably will.

We could do with having him 100% for the manchester game.

I saw Medal eating in that Chinese restaurant... Dragon Court above the casino opposite the stadium!

Didn't want to disturb him though as he was in this VIP glass room section and he kept looking away like he didn't want to be disturbed Apparently the players and Malky are regulars there as they eat often.. especially after match games!!
