Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall called up for Scotland squad to dace Norway and USA
5th Nov 2013
Cardiff City's number one has been in amazing form this season and has once again been called up by Gordon Strachan for Scotland duty
Goalkeeper David Marshall is the only Cardiff City player called up to the Scotland squad for two friendlies against Norway and the United States later this month.
Marshall has been in excellent form for Malky Mackay’s side, but midfielder Don Cowie and wideman Craig Conway, currently out on loan at Brighton, have not been selected by national boss Gordon Strachan.
With Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor ruled out with a thigh injury, Marshall is in pole position to add to his eight caps for his nation. Blackpool shot-stopper Matt Gilks is the other goalkeeper named along with Partick Thistle’s Scott Fox who has been called up for the very first time.
The 26-year-old was at Celtic when Strachan was in charge. He left Parkhead in 2010 and joined Thistle in the same year following brief spells with Queen of the South and Dundee.
Strachan said: “I take into consideration what Jim Stewart, the goalkeeping coach, says but in the games I have seen going to watch Partick Thistle live, he has made big saves.
“I’ve know him for a few years, I like his attitude. He was one of the Celtic youngsters who wanted to go out on loan.
“Some we had to push out the door because they were just quite happy to be Celtic players. Scott went on loan to East Fife, he was desperate to be a player. His attitude has got him where he is today.
“He will improve as a goalkeeper and that’s good. But it’s nice, it just shows we are looking about and won’t just go along with regular names.”
The Scots, who finished one point and one place above Wales in their recent World Cup qualifying group, face the United States at Hampden Park on November 15 and travel to Norway four days later.
