' Malky will not leave of his own accord '

Mackay will not leave of his own accord unless another club comes calling for him and he decides to cut his losses with Tan’s approval, but whatever the future holds, the manager’s position is strengthened immeasurably by beating Swansea.

If Mackay, for whatever reason, is denied the chance to a) keep Cardiff up and b) potentially do it with more room to spare than anyone imagined, then successes like this will make any premature departure look like a tragedy of almost Shakespearean proportions.

But if there was one figure who bestrode the occasion in a glow of triumphant vindication, it was Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay.

One newspaper claimed on the morning of the game that the Scot was set for the sack, just the latest development in a series of events which have undermined what Mackay is trying to achieve at Cardiff.

If there is any inkling of a desire on the part of Cardiff owner Vincent Tan to hand the manager his P45, the manner of his team’s performance against their neighbours made it look like pure folly.

Mackay’s reaction to such a pivotal victory at the final whistle is open to interpretation, but it provided little in the way of comfort for those desperate to see him stay.

A meeting with owner Vincent Tan and Malky is scheduled in the next 48 hours.
