Crystal palace make approach for malky mackay

Sat Nov 02, 2013 10:42 pm

Sunday 3rd November 2013.

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay has turned down the chance to become Crystal Palace boss, write Dean Jones and Steve Bates in the Sunday People .

The Scot, who leads his side into the Premier League’s first Welsh derby against Swansea today, was sounded out by intermediaries working on behalf of Eagles chief Steve Parish but made it clear he was not interested.

Former Palace defender Chris Coleman remains favourite to land the role but Ipswich chief Mick McCarthy has emerged as a contender and sacked England under-21 boss Stuart Pearce is also on the radar, as Sunday People Sport revealed last week.

Tony Pulis, who left Stoke in the summer, is definitely out of the running. Pulis was not impressed by a salary of just £500,000 a year, even though there’s a seven-figure bonus on offer if Palace beat the drop.

Coleman, who has support inside Selhurst Park , earns just £200,000 a year as Wales boss so the meagre Palace salary will not put him off.

Out-of-work Alex McLeish has not yet spoken to the Eagles about the vacancy but has indicated a willingness to do so.

However, co-owner Steve Parish and the rest of the Palace board are adamant they won’t rush into any decision and could even leave caretaker-manager Keith Millen in charge until the next international break in a fortnight.

The belief is that managerial changes are likely at other clubs – Fulham’s Martin Jol, Norwich’s Chris Hughton and Cardiff’s Mackay are all under considerable pressure - during that time and if one is axed, he will automatically become a leading contender.

Palace do not want to have to pay compensation for their next manager, which will surely count against McCarthy.

If I was Malky I'd be gone to Palace, he deserves better than this joke with tan in charge. :old:

Come on Shane, Palace are a basket case. no money and heading down. Malky would be mad to give up what he has at CCFC and every chance of keeping us up.Mr Tan is just part of modern football and the kind of owner that PL managers will have to get used to.

I know what you are trying to say, but if you where at a job which the company wanted you out and was making all the wrong decisions on your behalf would you want to leave to go to another company? Which would maybe be paying around the same wage? :ayatollah:

Malkys a class act for us, he deserves better. :malky:

Wrong club, he will be gone, when the right offer comes, maybe Norwich, other clubs know it too, maybe some clubs and him waiting for him to get the eve ho, so no compo having to be paid, plus he"ll have his contract paid up. You cant work under a tw*t like Tan 4 too long :(

Palace? I refuse to believe they went anywhere near him. I doubt they're at all interested in buying out someones contract...Parish himself said they were going to be looking through who was out of work, etc.

Malky will probably end up at Norwich, as much as it breaks my heart. Can really see it happening over the international break, but I bloody hope i'm wrong :)

Why would he go from a decent bottom half Premier League club where he's loved to a club certain for relegation

Cant see Norwich going for malky in all honesty if houghton is sacked, neither can i see fulham going for him if martin jol is sacked.

I agree that Mr Tan's actions seem counter-productive. He desperately needs us to stay in the PL but the recent events undermine Malky who needs completed support and focus on doing exactly that. We may never know the truth of what has happened but perhaps that chief exec has something to answer for.Malky obviously hates his guts.

If Malky went to Palace he's got no chance. If he can tame Mr Tan,keep his job and keep CCFC in the PL what a tick on the CV and boosted chances of another job at this level. Whether he stays with us beyond the end of the season or not. I think he believes that's his challenge and he intends to meet it.if things are changed Mr Tan had better have a bloody good alternative ready to go.

How can you say Palace are certain for relegation?? Its still lots of games to play. And lets be honest, we're not exactly safe ourselves. :old:

In the real world yes but the prem league gives them 70 million, so to pay up his contract is small ;)

I didn't say we are safe.
On the contrary we are not which is why we can do without behind the scenes disruption.

Haven't looked at the odds but the bookies must have them odds on. They are robust but lack quality (as per W Brom loss today). Can't see them attracting quality in January. Ten games in shows the way as you can't really see them pulling away even though they may get the odd result.

I think we are in the shit with everything going on behind the scenes, hopfully we'll stay up. But if we don't and tan fucks off i'll be back down the games so, win, win situation for me.

Of course there are still lots of games to play. But most people can see that Palace haven't got what it takes, they're more likely to go down than any other club.
