WATFORD AWAY

Watching them on the box at the mo and thought back to the time we played them possibly early eighties, and the two things that stick in my mind was getting there early by train and around four of five hundred of us getting to the ground and finding they had not locked the gate near our turnstiles, four hundred and ninety nine of us poured thru as soon as one of the lads opened it, whilst one of our lads from Cwmaman, Ian Williams, known as speedy Gonzales for obvious reasons, because he was ten paces slower and ten seconds behind everyone else for everything  and by the time he had worked out where everyone had gone, some stewards had turned up and locked the gate.

The second thing from that game, was it came a day or so after Elton John who was the club owner at the time came out of the closet and announced to the world that he was gay ( most of us, barring Ian Williams had already worked that out  )
Not good timing a day or two before Cardiff were in town, our fans spent the whole ninety minutes singing "Elton John's a homosexual.Elton John's a homosexual." even the Watford players and fans were laughing.

Been to Watford quite a good few times since that day and always found it quite a friendly club a bit like Norwich with no real hoolies, but when I first went there during the skinhead era 1970 it was quite scary and there was loads of trouble.

Actually It was the first time I'd been cautioned at a game, I told them I was fourteen rather than fifteen because I had a underage train ticket( may have been fifteen or sixteen, but who cares)
Thought I'd got away with it, until I came home from school one day to find a copper sitting in my house waiting for me with my parents, oops! The copper was decent enough and said they would not proceed with charges because I was only fourteen, and I could see my mother just about to chirp in and say " no he's not, he's fifteen" but my dad gave her a nudge and thankfully I got away with it.

Hope the police don't read this now, especially after the double jeopardy law has been changed.

Does this now mean that when I get mentioned in the press, like Annis, they will describe me as a former hooligan.
