Grammar

Which is correct out of the following?

1. You was.....
2. You were.....

The 'you' is a person singular!

I believe it should be 'You was....' but, I have an English mate that says it is 'You were'.

:ayatollah: :old:

Re: Grammar

Were

Re: Grammar

Sat Nov 02, 2013 2:13 pm

My pet hate is people using the word were, when they mean we are or in simple terms we're.,totally different meaning and very confusing.

Re: Grammar

Sat Nov 02, 2013 2:17 pm

You were.....

Put it into context.

You were with a friend the other day.
We were with a friend the other day.
They were with a friend the other day.

I was with a friend the other day.
She was with a friend the other day.
He was with a friend the other day.

Basic rules

You/We/They = Were
I/She/He/It = Was

There instead of their is one of my pet hates. 'We were running there lot down the road'.

Also of instead of have. 'We could of sorted it out ourselves'.

But I don't pull people up on it as it is pedantic when I clearly know what they mean.

The rule is singular/plural though, so I disagree that 'you were' is correct. All the others I agree with you, because they fit with the rules of singular/plural.....

I don't normally bother but, grammar and spelling is getting very poor these days. I might organise a March

Re: Grammar

I've noticed people saying "I could of" when they mean "I could have"

Re: Grammar

My pet hate is 110% what the f**k is a 110%

We need to give 110% effort in tomorrow's game, no you don't, just give 100% because the clue is in the numbers 100% it stands for maximum.

:ayatollah:

Now I would have said 'I may organise a march'

Don't know why I would have used may instead of might but I definitely would not have had a capital letter for the word march unless I was discussing the month and not a protest ;)

You have first person singular's and second person singular's. Thats why there is a difference.

Present tense

I am
you are
he/she/it is

we are
you are
they are

Past tense

I was
you were
he/she/it was

we were
you were
they were
