'Clever' Swansea Aim to Get Medel Red-Carded

Swansea City defender Angel Rangel has come out with one of the more unlikely quotes ahead of the hotly anticipated South Wales derby on Sunday by claiming Bluebirds midfield lynchpin Gary Medel is a prime candidate to pick up a red card and that his Swans team-mates can ensure that situation arises by being 'clever'.

Of course, player psychology and mentality is a big part of the game and can be decisive on the day. This notion of players actively trying to get opponents booked or sent off is well known, but usually very poorly received by both sets of fans, managers and media. Simulation, the waving of imaginary cards, sly digs off the ball are not really things you want to see - even in a derby against your fiercest rivals.

Pre-match talk usually centres on 'keeping our heads', 'ensuring we keep XI men on the field', 'thriving in the atmosphere' etc. It's not uncommon to single out particular players as likely candidates to become frustrated, although it's rarely suggested that it would be a good plan to actively contribute to that!

Speaking ahead of the derby, Rangel said:

"Medel`s a hard-working, holding player and aggressive, we know that. He likes contact with other players. He`s had an experience with Canas before, who got him sent off."

"That shows you that in these kind of games there are a lot of craziness and intensity. If you are clever enough, you can get him sent off, but he`s only one player."

A previous encounter between Medel (then at Seville) and Jose Canas (previously of Real Betic and now with the Swans) ended with El Pitbull being dismissed - though he is yet to pick up even a yellow card in his 9 appearances for Cardiff City so far.

What a shocker... What about 'What time is it' Flores? - He is agressive and partial to abit of banter himself.

Medel hasn't even lashed out in a Cardiff top when he probably would of in the Sevilla top. It seems like this transfer has sparked something saintly in him  :laughing6:

Obviously this is going to be an action packed blockbuster of a game but I think Medel will stay under control.

Bony will probably throw a few dives into the game along with Nathan Abysmally Dyer... The only person I'm dreading is De Guzman. I have always thought he would end up at a top club so I don't know why he ended up at S****** :jerk:

Ive been impressed by medels discipline so far. Theres prob more chance of the likes of michu or canas losing their heads in this game, michu especially, he's a right little drama queen

Medel is miles to clever for them, he will be the model professional.

They are trying every trick in the book, including putting pressure on the ref and bringing up the past, they are feeling the pressure I think, as we won the last Derby .... :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:
