Areas of Cardiff

Fri Nov 01, 2013 12:47 am

Areas of Cardiff are changing quickly and some not for the better unfortunately.

Grangetown,Riverside and areas of Roath have really gone downhill in recent years but there other places which are still very nice and interesting.

What are your views on the areas of Cardiff..?

Adam, as in all towns (including yours ;) ) there are areas of Cardiff that are "in need of attention"

However, as is evidence by changes already made to The Bay (including the initially strongly opposed Barrage), The Docklands, the old Grangetown marshes, etc., it is safe to say that the local Council are motivated to improve and modernise the city

Whilst it will not/cannot happen overnight, there is the will for it to happen and the areas you appear to be targeting will receive the attention they richly deserve in due course

I loves my city, I does. It has character and (on the whole) its people are as friendly and accommodating as any in the world (never mind the UK) ;) :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Good post, Sven. Apparently, he spent 10 years in a country called VEITNAM. I've asked him if that's the same country that Gary Glitter spent some time in and if he was there at the same time as him but he hasn't answered me.

Sadly i have to agree === And im moving out of Cardiff soon --sold my house in Camton and going somewhere more Welsh and British

Born and bred Cardiff --Splott--Rumney--Ely--Canton ---but unless you can afford to buy a house in the nicer areas ie Llanishen, Cyncoed, Rhiwbina, Lakeside, Lisvane ,Heath, Llandaff --then its all gone down hill

Three reasons

1 Crime Rate--had my house broken into twice car three times shed once and crazed un inisured motorist smashing into my house/Car also dont feel safe me or my daughters walking anywhere south of City Centre

2. Trafiic/Parking ---getting ridiculous queues everywhere all day 1 hour to get onto town and back 2 miles away .Parking fees ridiculous.

3. Immigration-- sorry to say but the open door policy has ruined the fabric of society in large areas Cardiff -- lack of integration, community spirit etc--Just want things back like they were in the 60s 70 s 80s --- when we valued and were at one with the community we lived in.

Moving 20 miles away --nicer house but cheaper and a real communtiy spirit

This is happening all over the UK it has been termed as "White Flight" although that is not a totally acurate phrase.

point 3 you make a valid point, the strain on housing, schools, health etc is at breaking point and will get worse before it gets better.Sadly there's no going back to the decades you mentioned.

Re: Areas of Cardiff

those 3 area's are generally on the up, riverside and grangetown never really change, roath splott have been improved with the ropey pubs being shut down and people actually going to pubs around splott for a change. The area around city rd is a bit rougher but it always has been. if anything, the traffic is getting much worse, people are more agro in these hard times.
Cardiff feels a bigger place than it used to a decade ago. It needed to grow but as usual it hasnt put a transport infastructure in place to cope. a light rail between the bay and centre is a must for starters....

Has it ever been 'uphill'?

I agree Roath has changed since I grew up there in the 80's, but its still a pretty cool area. We're going through tough economic times and its the working class areas which tend to suffer, boarded up shops, beggars, etc etc

Too many immigrants have spoiled the community spirit, but there are still people here which take pride in there neighbourhood. Adamsdown has got it worse, or Adamski as its now known..

I like City Rd, it has character. More charming in the dark mind! Tried a great restaurant the other day, Troy. Highly recommend it. City Rd reminds me of Wilsmlow Rd in Manchester, the famous curry mile.

As Cardiff grows as a city, we'll find our inner city areas will become more like the bigger cities in the UK.

I drive round and visit cardiff homes all day for work, the worst areas are st mellons (whole estate looks like its falling down), trowbridge + tremorfa (just grim, as always) and splott (so many junkies lately) i wouldnt wanna live in the posh places either they have no community spirit and hardly anyone knows their neighbours. If dont like foreigners then try ely and llanrumney which are actually nice places on the whole.

When I lived in Tonypandy for 9 years -house sales were maybe 1 per year. New families each side of me and opposite (7 of 9 newbies) were from London or English cities fleeing exactly the same as above and cashing in on house price difference to take a local lower paid job. Some of them were gutted that their community had been destroyed by immigration and poor town planning. None of them appeared to be alf garnets but just started getting excluded from where they were born n bred.

Re: Areas of Cardiff

Tremorfa is just so shit....

Adamsdown has really improved a lot over recent years

Splott isn't too bad, has a history and a few shady people about though

Bbut like every city, there are good and bad parts.
