'MEDEL IS OVERPRICED' " You paid to much for him "

Thu Oct 31, 2013 8:38 am

Thursday October 31st 2013.

Angel Rangel has insisted Cardiff City can be pleased by their start to life in the Premier League – but reckons they paid over the odds for one of their top-flight stars.

With just three days to go before rivalries are renewed between the Bluebirds and Swansea City, Liberty defender Rangel has paid tribute to the way Malky Mackay’s men have taken to their new surroundings.

And he singled out new boys Steven Caulker and Gary Medel as two key men ahead of Sunday’s showdown, claiming midfield destroyer Medel will be looking to thrive in the intensity of a derby battle.

But Spaniard Rangel has spoken of his surprise at Mackay’s £11m record-busting outlay on the Chilean known as “El Pitbull,” part of a £30m spending spree aimed to keep City away from a survival scrap in their first year at the top alongside the Swans, and reiterated his surprise at seeing former Swans loan star Caulker quitting Spurs for Cardiff City Stadium.

Rangel remains a key watcher of La Liga in his homeland where Mackay went to lure Medel from Sevilla this summer, and he said: “He’s a hard-working player. He’s a holding player and aggressive, we know that. He likes contact with other players.

“But I do think Cardiff paid too much money for him because he’s a holding midfielder not a goalscorer.

“He is a record signing but I think he has done well, along with Steven Caulker who was great for us. Even at a young age he showed he had great potential at the back.

“I thought he was going to sign for a better team, but he signed for them so fair play.”

Caulker shocked many when he signed for City from Spurs in a £9m deal having been ear-marked as a potential future Tottenham captain, going on to cement his place in Mackay’s side and take the captaincy in Craig Bellamy’s absence in the side.

And Rangel added: “Those two show they are good defensively and up front we know they also have quality players like (Peter) Whittingham and (Craig) Bellamy.

“They won a game they didn’t expect to win against Manchester City and they drew against Norwich away from home so they have done okay because it’s always difficult to adjust for a team that has just come up.

“They haven’t had easy games, but they picked up a good point at Everton as well. There’s still a long way to go but they are looking good.

“They’ve been doing great but we have as well so hopefully it’s going to be a healthy derby.”

A veteran of seven clashes between the two sides, Rangel knows, though, that derby games have a habit of seeing the red mist descend with Leon Britton, Tom Butler and Stephen McPhail – twice – sent off in recent years.

And after Swans midfielder Jose Canas and Medel clashed while playing for Betis and Sevilla in the Seville derby, Rangel said: “Medel’s had an experience with Canas with Medel being sent off and that shows you that in these kind of games there are a lot of craziness and intensity.”

Watch for a late hard tackle on him and Canas :ayatollah:

Obviously an Internal ploy from Swansea, to talk about over inflated prices for our players, as we all know this is why Tan got rid of Moody because and has caused a massive dividing in our club.

However, having seen Medel, Capoue and Wanyama play both before coming in to the PL and since they been in the PL, I defo think City got the best deal.

I just hope no one gets sent off as it does take something out of the game.

If what radio Wales reported rangel said is true he should be charged wit bringing game into disrepute! Keane did over his remarks in biography when still playing.
Rangel said swans should manipulate ways to get medel sent off.

Capou has only played about an hour and was very impressive versus Arsenal.

Different player to Medel.

Wanyama is very good; no coincidence that Southampton have conceded least goals in the PL.

Medel; jury is still out for me.

Im happy with what we paid for him, he fits into our set up well.

Thing is as a newly promoted club if we want good players we will pay a premium, hardly an attactive club just being promoted.

players are only worth what clubs want to sell them for and what the buying club is willing to pay

dont really care to much what Rangel says really

Too much maybe but if he continues to grow in this league he will be worth far more less face it if he had a british passport he would of cost twice that. (Joe Allen)

You're the one who wants to report players to the FA for saying someone is over priced. :laughing5:
