Any trademark/company registration people available?

How much is it around to register a companies name as a trademark to protect it? I know I have to register it with Companies House but I've been told this does not protect me and I need to get it trademarked to stop it being stolen.

Is it a unique name that you want to trademark? ie a brand name?

Registering a company will stop anybody else using that exact company name, but as long as it's in a different trade, it won't necessarily stop somebody using a similar name.

Its a brand name for a company that I want to use. The domain is already free so I know I can get that no problem. I have checked online and there's no company already with that name. Its a unique name. Its for a web business Owain as I want a more professional website to do work from now that can grow when the time is right.

As for registering the company, operating through a limited company can be overkill for a small business, and you will need an accountant to help with company tax returns/filing of accounts.

I don't really think trademarking is something you'll need to worry about, but it could be something to look at further down the line (it's not cheap!)

Cheers for the quick info Owain. I'll stick with the domain for now then and building up the website and brand and then look at it down the line if needs be.

If it's for web/gfx design the domain should cover you. I've operated as a freelance designer under a name for the past 4 years with no problem.

Intellectual property rights website you need mate, they do brands there as well as I recall , I think the website is www.ipo.gov.co.uk doesn't cost a lot , in furniture each design we reg with them costs £60 first item and 25 after that.

You can still use a 'business name' without registering a company.

You can call yourself whatever you want (within reason) but you'll still be a sole trader.

I wouldn't worry about registering a company just yet, as it is a lot more complicated, and in your case unlikely to be advantageous compared to operating as a sole trader/self employed.

For example you can call yourself JB Design Agency without registering a company (the only difference is you can put 'ltd' at the end!)

Cheers fellas. I got the name of the company sorted now anyway and its completely different from what I thought of earlier. Got the domain sorted which is better and it doesn't infringe any company or come close to doing so, its unique. Currently coding the site so hopefully by the end of the week, early next week, depending how much time I get to allocate to this, it should be up.
