Alex Ferguson helped Malky through boardroom issues

Tue Oct 29, 2013 11:24 am

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he's helped Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay through his strained relationship with Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan.

Ferguson told the opening night of his promotional book tour in Manchester that fellow Scot Mackay contacted him shortly after his head of recruitment Iain Moody was sacked and replaced by 23-year-old Kazakh Alisher Apsalyamov.

The pair previously spoke before and after Mackay secured the Bluebirds' return to English football's top flight after a 51-year wait and now the Cardiff boss, whose dad Malky senior, like Ferguson played for Glasgow outfit Queens Park, has sought out the council of the 71-year-old who he got to know when he brought his United squad to the Vale Hotel for a training camp last year.

Speaking at the first in a series of Q&A sessions following the release of his second autobiography, Ferguson underlined the unique pressures that came with the job.

The retired manager, who won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues, says he hasalso contacted Richard Bevan, the chief executive of the League Managers' Association, to volunteer himself if there were any other managers wanting his advice.

One thousand seven hundred tickets were snapped up for the first night of the tour in less than four minutes at Salford’s Lowry centre, where the words ‘Alex Ferguson Live’ were projected on to the side of the building.

His successor David Moyes was in the audience, alongside fellow United legends Sir Bobby Charlton and Denis Law.

Sir Alex will now embark on a nationwide tour to publicise his new autobiography.

More evidence of the close relationship between Malky and AF, I posted about this previously:

He's not doing Malky any favours by disclosing this information, especially with VT due into Cardiff at the end of the week!

Or maybe he is...

Do we know the content of those discussions? I doubt many do and I guess that Ferguson will have offered sound comment to Malky on the situation ;)

I honestly believe Tan will be coming on a 'damage limitation' mission next week with the promise (to Malky, even if only in private) of a January War Chest to ensure we progress the squad and climb the table to a more secure position

But then again, I could be wrong and Malky could be out on his ear  :ayatollah:

I don't think VT will like the fact that Malky went seeking advice to anybody tbh, but I hope you're right about VT coming to try and patch things up!

Mate, given recent (shall we say) 'confusion' and the high profile game we are about to embark on, I think even Tan will know that he needs to be seen to support his manager...for now at least :ayatollah:

Of course, I could be wrong ;)

As a jack I hope you don't mind me poking my nose into you (non football) business,I agree Ferguson was wrong to disclose this info,I'm not saying it is,but this could be looked upon as a weakness by some that their manager goes running to other managers with his problems.Think Ferguson sees it as another string to his bow for selling his book,if he is such a friend to Malky the these things should be confidential. I really hope you get your problems sorted and turn your attention to the real job in hand, staying in this division.Good Luck.

Most folk seek advice from their elders. Malky has said himself in the past he's spoke to people. It's no big deal.

I agree with the majority of your post, except that I don't see it as a weakness that Malky sought advice from Malky, merely that like you, I don't think that it was ethical of Fergie to disclose the information, which I suspect Malky wanted to stay confidential. I can only think that Fergie was trying to boost his own ego!

I also have no problem with you posting in any of my posts, or poking your nose in as you said, as it makes a refreshing change on here, to see a Jack posting, who isn't trolling!

There are a couple of decent Jack posters on here, like Scotsjack for instance, but most if not all of the rest only come on here for bites! They've only been back for around a couple of weeks though, as Swansea are now above us in the league, where as they were anonymous when we were above them!

NJ73 used to contribute quite a bit to the debate on here as well, but he's been a troll on here for a long time now as well!

I think you may have misunderstood me, I wasn't implying there was a weakness in Malky, what I was saying is that there are those that would see it as a weakness, possibly to be used to there advantage in future.

I understood your post, but I didn't write up my reply so clearly! :ayatollah:
