Norwich City boss Chris Hughton insists he didn't offer Cardiff City an equaliser after Leroy Fer strike

Norwich City manager Chris Hughton has brought Malky Mackay up on his comments that he had offered the Bluebirds a 'free goal' after Leroy Fer's controversial late strike

Norwich City manager Chris Hughton admits he's spoken to controversial star Leroy Fer about sportsmanship but insists he never offered Cardiff City a 'free goal' after his shock strike.

Dutch midfielder Fer kicked the ball into an empty Bluebirds net at the end of Saturday's scoreless Premier League draw after keeper David Marshall threw the ball out as Alex Tettey went down injured.

Expecting the ball straight back, Marshall stood on the edge of his box as Ricky Van Wolfswinkel threw the ball to Fer who struck it straight into the net, sparking angry scenes on the pitch from furious Bluebirds players.

After the match Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay smoothed over the row by saying Hughton offered his team the chance to walk the ball into the net for a 'free' equaliser but the Canaries boss has today insisted he made no such offer.

He said: “No, I didn’t (have a conversation with the Cardiff manager).

"Possibly he might have spoken to a member of my staff but not to me.

"I certainly didn’t have a conversation along those lines,” said Hughton, speaking ahead of Tuesday’s Capital One Cup trip to Manchester United.

“That was a hypothetical incident. I want to move on from that.

"It’s an emotional game. Our concentration is now away from it.

"I left it behind when I left the changing room at the weekend. Its an issue that has been dealt with.

“I think with Leroy, he is a young lad who has played his football in a different country and a different environment and I think he just got caught up in the moment. It was a fairly frustrating day for us and a game we should and could have won reasonably comfortably if we had converted the amount of efforts we had at goal. There was a little bit of frustration at that stage of the game but he just got carried away.”

After the match, man-of-the-moment Fer insisted such an incident would have not created a furore in his native Holland but has now been told of the unwritten rule in the British game.

“He’s been made aware of that,” said Hughton.

“It has been spoken about (and) for us it’s something we left as soon as we left the changing room. It’s been dealt with.

“Leroy spoke very honestly after the game. He’s an honest lad. I think he just got caught up in the moment.

“It was a fairly frustrating day for us. It was a game we should’ve won and could’ve won reasonably comfortably.”

I said he didn't in one of my replies to posts on saturday, when he spoke to Sky after the game, if the Ref had allowed the goal we would have lost the game, Best we remember this when Norwich come to us and we give them what for, Cheats the lot of them. Well done Ref though :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Ref handled it superbly. Even though he did signal with his hand for Vans Wankwankel to play the ball back to Marshall to restart the game, when the cheating cunts didnt he took it back on the grounds he didnt actually blow the whistle.

Dermot Gallagher said on SSN yesterday that you dont have to whistle for a throw to take place but after the games been stopped for an injury you blow the whistle to restart the game.
The idiot Skt presenter said "There was no injury so why was Marshall expecting the ball back?" Dermot clearly put him right that it was a Norwich player the ball was put our for by Cardiff.

Thats whats f*cking me off the most is no one is really acknowledging it was their player the ball was put out for. :x

Why would Malky lie about Hughton saying we could have a goal though? He obviously didnt so Malky shpuld have put the boot in not excused him. They are rivals for relegation after all.

In the interview I saw, Malky said that Hughton and his assistant (I can't remember his name) made the offer. It could be that it was his assistant that Malky actually spoke to, and assumed he was speaking on behalf of Hughton. So Malky hasn't told any lies if that's the case.

Malky said that Hughton and his assistant Colin Calderwood said that they would have allowed us to walk the ball in for an equaliser!

Steve, a good point (from you and the game  ) but I think even the thought that anyone really 'wanted' the goal to stand or that 'sportsmanship' wasn't at the front of Hughton's mind is abhorrent

Having said that, I am of the opinion (nothing else) that 'something' was said by the Norwich bench and that Malky interpreted it as he stated. Malky being a pretty honest guy, then mentioned it in his press conference in an effort to further diffuse the situation and for some odd reason Hughton has thrown it back out of the pram

Just seems a little odd  :ayatollah:

It certainly looked that way when he turned up for his interview at the CCS and showed the Bluebird hierarchy a PowerPoint from an interview with another club!

"Here's one I made earlier..." Doh!! :ayatollah:

Seriously, the human race is brain dead at times.

If its a hypothetical incident he wants to move away from then why bring it up again in the press? The word moron springs to mind. How people this idiotic get into positions of influence such as football managers I'll never know. Good grief.

Saying what he did did 2 things.

1. Calmed down our fans

2. More than likely pissed off Norwich fans

It's all mind games, Houghton saw what Malky was trying to do and has come out and said what he has to try and rubbish Malky's claim in an attempt to defend himself. Lots of silly mind games between managers, all year long. Get used to it.

Either way, whoever said what, I hope we f*cking crush them in the home return game. We should never have been so negative during Saturday's game; it's only Norwich...
