John Hartson offered Wales resignation TWICE but Chris Coleman turned him down

Coleman’s backroom staff have come under criticism following a poor World Cup qualification campaign

John Hartson has revealed he offered to quit as Wales coach, but national boss Chris Coleman turned down his resignation.

Coleman’s backroom staff have come under criticism following the Dragons’ World Cup qualification campaign which ended in a lowly fifth spot.

But Wales chief Coleman told ex-Celtic, Arsenal and West Ham striker Hartson, who won 51 caps for his country, to continue in his role.

Hartson said: “I have offered to resign a couple of times in the last couple of months, but Chris wants me there.

“He feels I’ve got a lot to offer the players with my experience. You will always get criticism, but I give 100 per cent.”

Despite just three wins in 10 Group A clashes, Hartson believes Coleman is still the man to take Wales forward after a 1-0 win over Macedonia and a morale-boosting 1-1 draw in Belgium, ranked sixth in the world, last week.

Coleman, whose contract expires following the friendly with Finland next month, has yet to sign a new two-year deal and will hold further talks with the Football Association of Wales to thrash out his future.

Hartson, 38, added: “I hope the FAW can get their heads together and give him the two-year contract. I do believe he is the man to take us forward and the players like him.

“I do hope he gets the opportunity to lead Wales into the next qualification campaign because this is going to be a great period.

“To create a good feeling in the nation you need wins and results and I thought the last two performances were very good.”

Had a bit of sympathy for Coleman, until I read this. Hartson is way out of his depth, and spends most of his time slagging us off. That would be fair enough, in itself. But he's supposed to be getting us all behind Wales.

Totally out of his depth, and too dull to be diplomatic when asked questions about Cardiff City, Coleman must fancy the sack if he wants to keep him, the average man in the pub talks ten times more sense IMO.....
