" Cardiff City DVP 1-0 Millwall U-21s "

Six in six for striker as City DVP beat Millwall 1-0

A second-half strike from striker Rhys Healey secured a second win on the bounce and a 1-0 win over Millwall for Kevin Cooper's Development side.

Healey's sixth goal in six games proved decisive, smashing home from close range just before the hour to break the deadlock, a lead which never looked in danger.

Torrential conditions at Cardiff City Stadium saw the early stages played at a slow tempo but it was a strong City DVP side, including Craig Noone, John Brayford, Joe Mason and Declan John who looked the more lively. Indeed it was Craig Noone who brought City's early effort, only to see it blocked at close range.

Declan John, enjoying his role on the left flank after making his senior debut for Wales last week, also came close as he hit his shot just over the bar. Noone once again looked to get involved shortly after only to be on the receiving end of a stern challenge from Will De Havilland.

It was a challenge that saw Noone depart just after the half hour mark, being replaced by Anthony Bell.

HALF TIME: Cardiff City DVP 0-0 Millwall U-21s

No changes for either side at the break, but it was Kevin Cooper's side who made the most of the early second-half running as Healey started to make a real impression on the match.

The former Connah's Quay man, made the most of the slightest of openings on the edge of the area only to hit his shot wide of the near post. Millwall responded, but wasted their opportunity to break the deadlock as Alfie Pavey fired over from close range.

Just two minutes later City were in front as Healey grabbed his sixth goal in six to fire the Bluebirds ahead from close range. After some neat play on the flank, Healey was at hand to smash home the rebound after an initial scramble on the line.

It was a goal that came on the hour, but proved decisive in this one as Millwall struggled to mount any serious challenge to City's lead in the closing stages.

It secured a second win on the bounce for Kevin Cooper's side.

Halftime score:
Cardiff City 0-0 Millwall

The Bluebirds had most of the first half possession and should have been 2-0 up going into the break but for some good saves from the Millwall keeper.
Craig Noone looked really promising and was having a great game upto his substitution. City are knocking the ball around well and dominating this development game thus far.
Let's hope they can notch some goals in the second half.

No sign of Velikonja wez so I'm not sure what's going on with him, last week he was in the stands so he could be injured.

Full time score:

Cardiff City 1-0 Millwall
Rhys Healy on 58 minutes

The Bluebirds still have their 100% home record in tact after this good display from the Cardiff lads. Simon Moore in the Cardiff goal was rarely troubled by Millwall and some of the players made a very good account of themselves.

Injury update:
Craig Noone has a protective boot on and is on crutches. I hope it's not too serious.

Hope he is okay to travel Saturday, even though he won't start.

Not a bad game played at a decent tempo and Millwall looked a good side. So tonight, Noone was the stand-out player and if he had not got injured, the scoreline would have been 3-0, such was the creative difference he was making. Looked fit too. Should make the bench on Saturday. Joe Mason I feel would benefit from going out on loan as he needs first team gametime for his personal development. He's not displaying attributes that would see him have any gravity in the PL so far and a loan spell, even for the rest of the season would be the best option for him IMO. Love these DVP games.

Cheers Steve. Glad you enjoy them too - I honestly don't know why more don't get to these games as they really are excellent. I see that the club are making an increased effort in promoting the DVP matches but I'd love to see more attending these games. Wish they were more frequent too as its a decent football fix between first team action.

Do you think the attendance would be better if the DVP team played at different places around the surrounding area. Say every other game in cardiff, then maybe, Cwmbran/pontypool area, Merthyr, bridgend etc.

I know they all have there own teams, and maybe costs for hiring the stadium would increase, but we may just get more people watching and becoming city fans

I'd like to see more friendlies as we've seen v Barry Town United and Merthyr for sure. I think that can only be a good thing for the DVP and local clubs. What I'm amazed at is that we have <20K ST holders but only attract an average of around 500 to the main DVP games. I do think that the club could do more to raise the profile of these games as I'm sure that many don't know what their missing out on.

its the same for every team in the premiership. i remember about 10 years ago we had about 50 turn up.
