47 YEARSAGO TODAY

Mon Oct 21, 2013 10:14 am

I was eleven years old and in school when they announced there had been a disaster at Aberfan, being a kid myself I really couldn't take it in or appreciate the magnitude of the disaster and what it meant.
When you have your own children and trust that they will go to school, be safe and looked after and something like this happens, it shakes you to the core.

If something like that happened today through people's neglect and at the end of the day due to fiances involved in making sure these tips were safe rather than just dumped as an unsafe eyesore on the mountains above the land that had made other people rich on our men's sweat , our mother's tears and our kids blood, there would be a mass uprising and riots on the streets.

There was no justice and no blame accepted, the coal board even took money from the charity fund to clean up the mess they had made.

I know people who lost family there, I know people who were among the few that survived, this never goes away, and for those that say time is a great healer, I totally disagree.

A lesson to all of us, appreciate what matters in life, because we don't know when it's going to be snatched from us, or the ones close to us. R.I.P. all those lost that terrible day. :(

Agree with every word you say, Gwyn. I was eight at the time, not living in the central valleys, but can remember Aberfan. Remember my parents talking about it, and seeing it in the papers, and on the news. It was difficult for a child to understand, and only later did the full horror hit home.

May they all Rest in Peace. Including the people who lost loved ones that terrible day, and who died with broken hearts.

Many an English mob chanted "Aberfan, Aberfan, Aberfan" at us years ago, at away games. I bet they claim to be proud to be British. No pride in killing children, Great Britain. May they rest in peace.

I was 17 at the time and working in Wimpys Builders on the Newport Rd, It was Wimpys head offices at the time.
A guy who was a driver name Jimmy Duncan came back and told us about it, a lorry load of us went up to help.
When I seen the place I just stood there and cried my eyes out while I try to dig with all the others.
I will never forget that day, never.
And the english government ( Labour )of the time made the people of Aberfan pay for the clean up from the money that people around the world sent to the people.
I took my children Iolo 7 & Gwenyth Angharad 6 up to the graves of them poor children last years and told them the story and they put flowers on the Park where the school once stood. R I P Welsh flowers FE GODWN NI ETO

I wsa still a baby when it happened, but remember seeing the story broadcast on tv for what must have been the 5th anniversary of the disaster. It left a mark then and stays with me now. There but for the grace of God...............
It just so happens that today is also my Missus birthday and so every year we have a poignant reminder to count our blessings. Such a dreadfull tragedy that should never have happened. Thinking about it always fills me with a mix of utter sadness and anger that the people that caused this tragedy would not even apologise, let alone be held responsible for their actions. Tragic beyond belief. RIP Angels of Aberfan.

I was just 6 years old but my Father who drove a big excavator on the slurry tips at Cwmdare rushed over there with many others to try and help the rescue attempt. He told me in later years that he could never ever forget that day and what he saw a generation wiped out and more innocent victims of 'the price of coal'

RIP Each and everyone of them.
